can't figure these brakes

I ride a nice simple road ss. brakes are your usual single cable from levers to brake mech. My son has a road/BMX - POS, weighs half a ton.
Rear brake is kaput - the mechanism is unbelievable - cable comes out of the lever, into a pipe , two cables come out, though the headset, into a ring - some no-tangle mechanism - that's loosely connected to another ring, from there down to another pipe - so now back to a single cable, then on to a linear-pull mech.
And it doesn't work. The springs work on the mech, but it doesn't spring back at the lever - too many interfaces and places to go wrong. Any suggestions? (that don't involve the local dump and pointing him at a real bike)

It's a gyro. They can work if you set them up right but it's diffucult and annoying. I would just spend $9 a get a straight cable for him. It makes things easier. If you want too put some pictures up we can help tell you what to adjust to dial in his gyro. Try taking it to a local shop and they can give him some regular housing for the brakes or fix up his gyro a bit.

Most stock bikes have crappy brakes it's nothing new.

Some other things you can do to fix them up would be:
-Sanding the rim of glaze/black paint if it has any.
-Getting a straight cable or dual gyro cables
-Softer tackier brake pads Eagle pads work good along with Kool Stop
-New brakes...i would go withDia-Compe Hombres. (They are cheaper than some but still very nice.) If you don't mind spending a little more on his brakes get him some Odyssey Evo 2's.

Honestly, just spend the $9 and get a straight cable, they feel better and they're a lot better feeling.

Like i said before and wtp re-stated...just spend the $10ish bucks your local shop will charge you for a straight cable.

thanks
sounds like a straight cable's the way to go - that way I know what I'm dealing with.
