do you use a fat chain?

why does everyone have a sudden interest in these huge big fat chains? i run a kmc 410 chain and ive never snapped it once. i ride plenty of ledges and do sprocket slides here and there also. i dont see why someone would want a huge chain that wont run smooth and will make your bike heavier? is it because they break chains a lot? someone please explain
