lacing wheels with all spokes on inside of flange??

someone brought this up the other day. they said the 'hot' new thing to do now for street is to lace up your wheels with all the jbends of the spokes on the INSIDE of the flange. so that when you grid you dont hit the spokes.

supposedly this is win if you grind alot

i think its major non win though. you have to be giving up rigidity for it and the spokes would run backwardly giving you crappy tension

eitherway, not tryin to *****. just seeing what other people here though of this idea(im not saing its a bad one) and/or if you have a picture or you run this yourself

EDIT: forgot to add that the pattern im referring to is a cross patter (3x) with all the jbends on the INSIDE. not radial lacing

I would not do it ,Look on the GSPORT web site. They have a way to lace them up for grinding.

my winter bmx is set up like that with a radial pattern. it feels rock hard, and even bouncing down a curb hurts. my old normal 3X lace wheels were better.

yea i forgot to add. i asked if he just meant radial with all the jbends in the inside and he said that he mean a 3x with all the jbends on the inside. thus my opinion of the awkward lacing.

i checked the gsport site, thats actually the diy that i used to lace up my first couple of wheels.

"Here you can see the finished wheel, look closely and you can see the effect of interlacing under the third, all the spokes "weave" in and out more than normal and this will help protect the wheel on grinds."

i think what HE means is that the spokes bend 'in' closer to the hub when you go under on the 3rd cross rather than the 4th. so it keeps the spokes away from whatever your grinding

good point though

^ Wow, that a really complicated lacing pattern... it's more like a basket weave!

Wouldn't a lace-up with all the Jbends on the inside of the hub flange be just as strong?

Just speculating here, I would imagine that spokes with so many kinks like that would be weaker. I'm inclined to think that a straight spoke is a strong spoke (with one cross-over bend max)?

Any thoughts about this?

I would imagine that having all the spokes entering a flange from the same side would put an unusual amount of force on the flange in one direction with nothing to balance it out

I have a 26" mtb wheel laced radially without any cross-overs with the Jbends all coming from the outside of the hub flange. I did it out of interest because a lot of guys in our BMX club (at the time) got into it - front wheel only of course. The idea behind that one is because it's lighter because the spokes are shorter.

Obviously if the Jbends all come from the inside it will create a "shallower" dish, which could be more likely to taco in a 26" wheel but probably not for a 20" with 48 spokes. I'd be interested to hear from someone who has done it on a 20".

---------------

Funny enough, I've actually got this lacing set-up in one of my bikes, but it really doesn't count in the context of this thread. It's on my "mini" pocket downhill bike which has 12" wheels. In this case, there is no other way of lacing the little wheel because the spokes are too short for the Jbends to come from the outside of the flange. It also has to come from the inside to "clear" the disc brake caliper. It seems to be strong enough to handle the braking forces from the disc rotor.

Thats how I roll, Its just you have to tighten all the spokes alot so the heads are all smooth with the hub the first time.

Do you know what's holding it there? First time I've heard of the device... does it spin with the hub or is it fixed and stationary on the drop out?

You slide it on the axel, and when you tighten the axel nuts it stays in place.
The front gspots spin with the wheel tho.

Do a Google IMAGE search of "Pocket DH." There's not many pics of them out there but you should be able to find some more.

Here's a couple I took at a board-walk loop not far from my home.
