sealed and unsealed pedals?
sorry for posting another thread, ive posted alot lately, but what is the difference between sealed and unsealed pedals?

i think it means whether the bearings in the pedals r sealed (when the bearings r encased) or unsealed (when u can get to the ball bearings). however im not completely sure and this is probably a horrible expliantion

No, that was it exactly.
Typically your pedals use loose ball bearings, similar to what you find in unsealed wheels, or unsealed heatsets.
Sealed pedals use cartridge bearings. So, they may require less maintenance. But, I have also heard of sealed bearings breaking more quickly, because the side load you introduce in pedals is to much for the bearings to handle. Generally speaking, cartridge (sealed) bearings roll very, very well, but any side pressure on the bearings rips them apart pretty quickly.

i have S&M unsealed pedals and i have never had any problems. I think there some of the best u can get strong with extreme grip and you can change the spikes in them when they were down. bad news for my shins!

I'm new here, I have the Odysey South Gates sealed.. they're only like 45$ sealed, so i figured what the hell... they've lasted me longer than any other pedals.. they usually fall off of the spindle.. it hasnt happened yet with these.. but its not really worth buying sealed unless you really feel the need to..

sealed would also be easier to disassmeble and clean but i have never needed to take my pedals apart and i have been riding them really hard for more than a year now and they still spin like a dream.
