Haro makes some good stuff, there is also excellent products available online at www.danscomp.com as well as other online retailers. The advantage with online stuff is you get more variety than your local store, and there is less markup on products than your local bike shop (LBS) will give you.

The down side, is that online will not build the bike for you and does not really offer you the same warranty and service that your LBS does. You will also pay shipping, but no taxes on your new ride. But, your LBS most definitely won't display 1/10th the bikes that you can see online.

1) Don't order from Dan's. Order from Empire or Albes.
2) Haro is decent enough, if you're a beginner.
3) Mailorders will build you a bike, but the tubes will not be inflated, and the handlebars and seat won't be attached.

I never have.. but they have been known to be a little shifty.. as far as like making fake shirts and what not.. thats why you can't buy Terrible 1 stuff from them.. they dont do buisness with dan's.

Probably since Dan's started being shady and not owned by a rider, but I have a feeling that people weren't ordering from them prior to them opening up, either.

www.danscomp.com - I will continue to order from them, if and ONLY if www.flatlandfuel.com doesn't have what I need. Dan's has great prices, often beating the competition and as long as you know exactly what you want, they will often have it and take care of you.

In 12 years of mail order, and web orders, they haven't screwed up once. Okay, once, but that's not a bad track record. Especially considering Trend and Albes both screwed me over really bad. You just have to watch out with Dan's because they really are clueless.

Oh, and bike shops that sell 'complete' bikes, usually ship them in the box that the manufacturer sends it to them in. They don't assemble it at all, the assembly that is done was done at the factory in Taiwan. So, when you get the bike, you do have to put a few things on, but then you also REALLY need to dial everything in, which is tough if you are clueless on bike maintenance. Easy if you know what you are doing though.

So what kind of bikes are light and strong in the $200-$300 range? Any opinions on the Hoffman Rhythm EL-2?
