snapped crank

I was at the track today and when I came down from one of the jumps, my crank snapped off! My dad says he will weld it back but won't it take away some strength? It would be great if I could weld it because I cn't afford a set of cranks.

Probably because they are invariably of a higher quality than one-piece cranks, no matter how bad of a make they are?

Most 3-piece cranks are 4130 cromoly or 7075 aluminum. And they come with bearings. And a spindle. And spindle bolts. And in many cases, pinch bolts. And a bearing spacer. And crankarm spacers. And they have threads tapped out. And plenty of welds. The list goes on and on.

A handlebar is generally two pieces of metal welded together with four bends and a bit of knurling in the middle.

Which do you think would cost more?

idk my crank arms look like a big piece of metal with a drill for the pedals and a hole in the other end to put it on the bike

I can't believe anyone would suggest welding one piece cranks... CRIPES - get a few bucks. A doctors visit will cost you thousands without insurance, but still a hundred bucks or more WITH insurance because you are crazy enough to do something flat out ********.

As said - NEW 1-piece cranks can be had for under 20 bucks.

Good 3-piece cranks (Profiles) can be had on eBay for under 100 bucks. The Profiles are the way to go and if you break a crank arm you can buy brand new single replacement crank arms off of www.danscomp.com for like 40 bucks each or something... But, you are not very likely to break them.

DO NOT WELD IT UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE OUT A LOT MORE MONEY THAN YOUR CRANKS!

Yeah - seriously, there are likely people who would send you their old 1-piece cranks if you pay for shipping! If I could find my old parts then I would send you a set of one-piecers for free. They are something you will never touch again once you own good 3-piece cranks.

How the heck do you snap a one piece crank? I weigh 210 pounds and have yet to even bend one? Go to your local bike shop, and find a decent one piece, preferably CrMo, or a decent 3 piece set!! Welding a one piece crank back together is like asking to get hurt, begging even.

if your broke then get some 1pc cranks or just save up $$ and buy a nice set of either Profiles or PRIMO's....they shouldnt break...wait where did you bend them or break them....at the arm...cause if you did then you can get new crank arms depending onthe company....same with the spindle...

Someone explain to the new guy why we don't bother commenting on 7 month old posts. This thread was put back to rest last month.
