Crank trouble

i've got a bit of a problem, when i'm riding my bike my crank occasionally makes clacking/popping noise, it's mainly when i'm putting more pressure on the pedals like riding up a hill, it just clacks/pops , i'm thinking that the bearings are loose but i might be wrong. sorry if it's a repost.

Not totally sure but heres two ideas.

1. Could be the pedals, check them out. (Might be broken or something)

2. Maybe the BB is broken. Although when I rode my friends MTB with a broke BB it made a LOT of noise all the time.

My 3 peice made creaking noises before I usaully just take it apart clean it with some WD40 and put it back together. Or if your not to sure on the whole taking your crank apart just spray some WD40 into it. That usually works. Most times it'll make noises because the lubricant on it is wearing off.

where are you putting the lube? The bearings are sealed and you want for the spindle to move with the inside of the bearing cup, not slide freely from it.

Try to stay away from wd-40 and use a good penatrating grease. wd-40 removes grease and leaves a coat of silacone behind. it is good for cables but not good for gears and bearings.

I'm pretty sure WD-40 stands for Water Displacement-40. Heard it somewhere. I dunno about the best lubrication for BMX bikes. But something I like for MTB is Pedros Syn Grease. Works really well.

If the crank/popping noise is coming from the BB area and you're sure it's not from the seatpost or wheels or drivetrain or something other, have it replaced.

It's like $20.

I have got Profiles on my ride, and they start to creek when some dirt gets in between the arms, cone spacers, and bearings. Just take them apart and clean them with a rag. be sure that when you put the arms back on the spindle that you put some grease on the splines. That will prevent the arms from seizing on the spindle. Oh yeah, WD-40 is the devil. That crap shouldn't even be mentioned in any of these threads. For wet lube, go find some Pro Link.

On one note... WD-40 acts as a de-greaser and can acually eat away the grease off of things, wich ain't good. I'd lissen to Ninshadow on that one.

Another thing is, I am having the same problem, I bieleve there is a loop hole in 3 Peice cranks. You see, when the arms are on to tight the spacers can press up agains the sealed bearings and get that noise effect of it creacking like somthing is blown. What I did, and it stopped for awhile was take White Lithieum grease ( In my opinion is the best grease out there ) and get some on your finger and rub around the washers and put some on the spindle that is sticking out.

One last thing. The best grease is White Lithieum!
