ok, i have a few BMX bikes, there my brother in laws. i work on them when they break, i just found out there are 2 different size axles? is there a standard one? or are there more than 2?? and my raleigh "20" uses the smaller axle where a mongoose takes the bigger one. any help? and i wrote BMw in the header, haha, o well im tired and its late.

usually theres 3/8" and 14mm....the 3/8 is smaller and the 14mm is larger ( i believe the 14mm is usually for griding or something )

the raleigh must have smaller axles than a 3/8. ive never seen a mongoose with a 14mm axle .maybe he has one of the high end mongooses. my friend had a specialized with axles bigger than 3/8, but smaller than 14mm.

Specialized (and a few other brands) used to have frames and hubs that used 12mm axles.

Half inch was big for a while and a lot of riders thought it was perfect because they thought 14mm was overkill and 3/8" (10mm) was to small. So, 1/2" fit right in between. Not sure if that is 12mm ... maybe.

Anyways, let's not forget that sealed hubs usually require manufacturer specific axles for them, and then in the 3/8" size you also have 24TPI or 26TPI depending on whether it is a coaster brake or regular freewheel/front hub. Just to confuse things even more.

Any bike shop can tell you in 10 seconds what size axle you need for the bike front and rear. If it is 3/8" and is unsealed and has 'bending' issues, then get a Standard Industries or Kink replacement axle.

1/2" = 13mm. Or the wrenches are interchangeable anyway.

ok, i measured the one rim i have for the "20" and it measures 7mm. can that be? i also found a BMX rim in the trash that is the same size, it was off a huffy.

a friend of mine said department store bikes use that size.

anybody know?

We're talking about axles, not rims.

right, my "20" is a Raleigh "Twenty" 7mm would be a small rim.

Are you talking about height or thickness? 99.9% of BMX rims are 1-1/8" thick, and the sidewall height varies.

im talking about the axle. the circumference of the axle, i measured it with calipers and i got 7mm.

i dont care about the rims, anything that will fit will be fine with me.
