There are a lot of current Punk/whatever bands who's messages are a lot more "advanced" (I say this meaning they've changed, not that they're "better") or different than those of, say, 1984. Books Lie (soon to be nonexistent) has some of the most well thought-out, intelligent, awesome messages I've ever had the pleasure of having blasted at me in a cramped 125-degree basement. As far as other current DIY bands with lyrics and messages that have grown past the overly cliché themes of hating the government and getting wicked plastered, I'd have to say one of the most unique and intelligent bands in the Punk scene ever is Sinaloa, from Boston. Once again, not something that fans of straight-up Hardcore/Punk might enjoy, but this band is doing really great things. You can read their lyrics on the right side of the page:

so true, people often think it's all dead and gone, like just some 80's thing. Maybe it's not "new" anymore, but it still sounds good and is fun to listen to, and has a message, that's what counts.

I'm having a hard time comming to terms with the fact that there really aren't many, if any r(A)d punk bands in my city (portland)... that's why I started my own.

I'll probably be moving to Portland in about six years. There are great bands in Portland: Life at These Speeds (one of my favourite current bands; ex-Arrayo Seco), NoArmsNoLegs, Mustaphamond, They Found My Naked Corpse Face Down in the Snow (member of NoArmsNoLegs), etc. My friend Jerry (of NoArmsNoLegs and They Found...) runs a record company called Limbless, based in Portland. Grey Sky records is also out of Portland, and puts out good ****.

That's possible, but they play a bunch of shows all over Portland all the time. When they came out here, they played my friend Josh's basement and it was all ages. Then again, house/basement shows are, in every single instance I've ever experienced, always all ages. I'm sure you can catch them sometime at an all ages show. If you want to hear them before you go to a show of theirs, I can upload a couple songs from the LP to my server for you to check out.

yes, the same message as before. like i said, only the a-hole leaders have changed. rarely does the true political agenda change. nuff said. carry your flags. i am done with the conversation. back to music.
in honor of all this, i dug deep and listened hard
Blitz - VOICE OF A GENERATION
SLF - INFLAMMABLE MATERIAL and NOBODY'S HEROES
Effigies - REMAINS NONVIEWABLE
Rites of Spring - s/t
Clash - SANDINISTA and BLACK MARKET CLASH
SubHumAns - THE DAY THE COUNTRY DIED

all great music, and still fresh after all these years.

Dang, Skit, Tom Waits is the deal.

Right now, I've got No Boundaries: A Benefit for the Kosovar Refugees spinning in my D drive. This is an accomplishment because half an hour ago my D drive was deader than Elvis, Tupac, Biggie, and Duran Duran.
