soul power-the documentary chronicling the zaire 74 music festival with headliner james brown.
came out 2009 but of course all the footage is from 1974. the music festival was about 6 weeks before
the big "rumble in the jungle" foreman vs. ali fight that was so well covered in when we were kings.
capturing the time/place/spirit, i give it a 7-especially if watched before or in close proximity to kings.
in a vacuum by itself, i rate it a 6. the general story of the festival is interesting but there is not enough
performance time (movie is only 90 min.) and too much behind the scenes organizing & promoting.

so i married an axe murderer with mike myers. his caricature of his scottish father is hilarious and
the late great phil hartman steals the scene at one point. 7.5/8.

apocalypse now (original release but included in the redux package) with coppola's running commentary.
have never seen heart of darkness about the making of the film but finally will soon enough.
definitely worth watching through the entire way through listening to the director's daily trials.
love both the original & redux versions; give both a 10.

Down in the Valley

It had Ed Norton, but I think my least favorite performance so far... Still was decent.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians - The Lightning Thief 5
Good CGI, plot was thin. Gave my 10 year old a reasonable introduction to Greek mythology, though, which is what got it a 5.

why it wasn't nominated for anything. missed the cutoff date? maybe clint/the studio
had bigger fish to fry. best new movie i've seen in a theater since notes on a scandal
with judi dench & cate blanchett. it's been pretty slim pickins' last few years...

really enjoyed it might get loud.

a single man-colin firth & julianne moore were excellent

liked a serious man but as an entry in the coen bros stable of movies, didn't like it as much as
many of their films. had its' moments though and was definitely worth seeing.

going to catch the argentinian film that just won the academy award for best foreign flick
(name escapes me) when it rolls out semi-nearby.

Definitely want to see all the foreign film noms. One of the art houses here did a weekend of all the nominated shorts but I missed it. My movie club is seeing Greenburg this weekend. I didn't much care for the previews but will probably check it out. This club actually discusses the movies after which is really nice LOL!

Saw Paris, When It Sizzles (imdb link) yesterday. It's a movie from 1964, with Audrey Hepburn and William Holden. Nice little movie. I'd give it a 7-8 out of 10.

How To Tame Your Dragon - 6, generously.

I'd rate most dragon movies at a 3 or worse. I don't know why they try to be so serious, and all their dragons end up looking the same anyway. This one, while suffering from Dreamworks's tendency to make a story too easy to follow (although that's good for the kids), was still entertaining enough, and had a creative take on the whole dragon thing.

Clash of the Titans -- I don't know, maybe a 6.

It's the same old story, almost like Avatar is another rehashed story, except that it doesn't pretend to be very different. The mechanical owl makes a (very) brief appearance, and the CGI looks pretty darned good. The projectors they use for 3D shows need to have brighter lamps, though -- I'd almost rather see it in 2D.

Clash of the Titans 3D - I'll give it a 5.5 out of 10,

Some excellent effects, and some totally lame, like the Gods hangout on Mt Olympus. There appeared to be a few top notch actors in it there for the superannuation paycheck.

Included in the entry price was Sam Worthington. Not included in admission price were giant smurfs.
