Shiri- 8/10 a very good if a bit predictable action flick and Kim Yoon-jin is quite easy on the eyes.

Watched Avatar - The Last Airbender with my kid the other night. 3/10 even my 11yo said it was lame as advertised. Has Shaylaman done anything good other than The Sixth Sense?

Inception - 7/10. Fun action movie, shallower than I had hoped but deeper than I had thought it would be.

Well, Unbreakable was pretty good. Other than that, no.

Of course, The Sixth Sense overshadows most movies, so perhaps the comparison is unfair.

Yep. In fact, I saw it just last night. Good thing it is relatively short or viewers might be damaged.

Also watched the one where they drive ****box 4x4s through the Bolivian jungle, across the altiplano, up onto an Andean volcano, give up at 17,200' and take the long way to the coast. Fascinating, and the first time I've ever seen one of their ****box rides just die.

I have to disagree. I think Half-Blood Prince is one of the better ones, especially considering a) it has a LOT to condense into one movie, b) there is very little in the way of fun and games in the book. I gather you didn't think Hallows Pt. 1 was as dark? (I haven't seen it.)

Titus, as in Titus Andronicus - a story that is depressing enough to make you swear off Shakespeare forever. Ever since Netflix delivered it I've been thinking, "What the hell did I order this for?" But this one is adapted and directed by Julie Taymor and I can't imagine how it could be done better. Anthony Hopkins, Hope Lange, Black Depression. And in the end I have to say, "Outstanding". Just the opening where the victorious army returns to Rome is enough to curl your hair. 9/10

So I have a new magic name to go along with Pixar and Joss Whedon. It is Julie Taymor. Everything I've seen from her has been terrific! More, please.

Oh, and an oldie but goodie: A Nun's Story with Audrey Hepburn. 9.5/10 (unless you're allergic to spirituality)

.
Actually I thought HBP was kind of boring. Mostly because of the ending - it seemed to end on a whimper. I know they have to leave some of the stuff out but it felt like the actors were sleepwalking through their roles (Radcliffe and Rickman especially). In the book they were in a huge exciting battle where the HBP's identity is finally revealed. The movie just kind of walked thru that part. I read somewhere that the filmmakers wanted to downplay the battle at the end for fear it would take away from the Deathly Hallows. I don't agree but oh well. The Deathly Hallows pt 1 was plenty dark and quite good I thought.

Fair enough. I also thought the final battle was far too low-key.

As for Rickman's performance, IMO that's very hard to judge at this point. It isn't until Deathly Hallows we find out what he (or Dumbledore, for that matter) is really up to. I suspect that his performance is intended to be ambiguous to avoid cuing the audience one way or the other, and that could easily be read as "flat".

Sounds like I better go see it. How much are they charging for movies these days?

The Informant! 7/10. Matt Damon is very good, casting is interesting, and the period look is spot on (who knew the early 90s were already "period"?) Still, it wasn't as good as the This American Life story on the same subject.

Back to the Future - 9/10

I've always loved sci-fi adventures. Will watch the sequel soon. I hear it's not as good as the original, but I'll check it out anyway.

I'll give Tron: Legacy a 9/10. 6/10 if you weren't a fan of the original, and 3/10 if you wanted a substantial storyline.

Man, it looked hot.

The last movie I watched was Inception and I Would rate it 10 on 10. This is the best movie I had ever seen till now. Leonardo Dicaprio was awesome in this movie. Other movies which I had recently seen are:

- Takers (7/10)
- The Town (8/10)
- Batman The Dark Knight (9/10)
- Iron Man II (9/10)

"True Grit" (2010)

Cohen Brothers' faithful adaptation of the book with Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn. Dialogue is patterned after convoluted style of 19th century writing and takes some getting used to. Matt Damon is entertaining as the Texas Ranger, played by Glenn Campbell in the original. Newcomer Hailee Steinfeld more than holds her own as the young girl who seeks revenge for her father's murder. Josh Brolin makes a brief appearance as the killer on the run.

I watched the 1969 original shortly after this screening and was more impressed with the remake.

9/10

Tron - 2/10. Took forever to go nowhere, 3D is a stupid gimmick, and it was a brainless film. How long can one be entertained by color and flash? BFD.

Although - the woman that plays "13" in House was in it. She is pretty nice to look at, but not on screen long enough to distract one from the fact that this movie is still-born.

I'll second this. If you expect it to be a Tron movie, you will not be disappointed. If you expect it to be something else, it will still look awesome, but will leave you with a lot of questions. Still, better than Avatar.

My wife and I are planning to see it again tonight, this time in IMAX 3D. My thanks to any theater workers who volunteer (or are voluntold) to work on Christmas Day.
