Super 8 - Very good film, in the vein of "Stand By Me" with a little Spielberg influence thrown in. See it in the theater if possible!

Cars 2. The kid wanted to see a movie this weekend, and how can you go wrong with a Pixar movie? Well..... if you spend $9 on this one, you will find out. Wait for the DVD if you must, but it it sort of a turd.

Contrived, stupid "story", just to get another Cars movie up and making money. It was nice hearing Micheal Caine's voice, but that's it.

The impression that I got from Lasseter regarding the original Cars was that it was sort of a pet project of his to begin with. He loves cars, apparently, and wanted to make a car movie of his own. That first one, to my eye, captured the soul of automobiles and why people enjoy playing with them -- racing, going for drives through the country, or cruising the strip.

There just wasn't that sort of focus for Cars 2, though. Like you said, it was a contrived story, based on "friendship" and that's about it. Maybe there'll be a Cars 3 where they rediscover what was important in the original, like they did with the Toy Story series -- but then again, there's no boy owner to grow up and push the story into the future.

Antichrist with Willem Defoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Discomforting, eerie, visually striking. Not much story. Excellent portrait. 8.5/10

Bridesmaids - 7/10

I liked this more than The Hangover (didn't even bother to see the sequel to it).

Agreed. It really bothers me that everyone just assumed it was going to be a chick flick. Its not like that style of comedy is strictly for men, and the ladies in that movie proved that women are just as funny as dudes.

And if you saw the first hangover, then you've pretty much already seen the second one. It's just a less funny version of the Vegas story.

That's what I heard... and that's why I didn't bother with the second.

I missed the beginning - which I've seen now and it made no difference to my evaluation.

Remember, "Pixar" is now Disney. Would that Walt were still alive.

Pixar still controls Pixar, though. Cars 2 is still Lasseter's responsibility.

"I Am Curious" Sexual revolution era Swedish art house flick. Good discussion in the beginning about whether or not there is (or was, I guess) a social hierarchy in Sweden. Then it got kind of boring. The main character does go on an overnight bike trip, though. Which is awesome.

Just got back from seeing "Ghostbusters" outside in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Forgot how fantastic that movie is, and even better with fellow NYers cheering at all the New York bits of the film.

"Soloman Kane" UK release, never made it to the US except for a few festivals. Totally ROCKED!!!! It's exactly how I envisioned it when I was a kid reading Robert E Howards books. Conan should have been done by these guys. They re-set the bar for this genre far above what Hollywood can do. (or will do)

I went to go see "The Trip" last night. Loved it. Steve Coogan's fictional version of himself is the perfect character. An unapologetic egotist, while being completely self loathing, absolutely pathetic, and a total jerk. One of my only complaints is that the entire film features these gorgeous shots of North England's beautiful countryside landscapes. There's nothing wrong with this, but every time they were traveling all I could think to myself was "Man...I MUST ride those roads." A little distracting . Still...8.5/10
