Not exactly a ringing endorsement. Though to be fair, Hugo is paused after my wife and I made it about halfway through and decided that, given we had to get up early this morning, we'd wait until tonight for the rest.

Finished Hugo and decided I rather liked it. Maybe 4/5?

Savages. 9 out of 10 thumbs. Violent crime thriller with drug war commentary subtext. Oliver Stone back to what he started out doing so well.

Girl with the Dragon Tatoo (US version) 8.5/9
well done adaptation of a very good book. They played down the
whole financial aspect of the book which at times bogged down the story/plot.

The only thing I didn't like about it was they folded the entire 2nd book in the story
(hornets nest) into the last 10 or 15 minutes of the movie.

"Brave" 9/10

great classic fairy tale. great voice casting and characters. best movie of the summer (for us) thus far. not a 10 due to a little 2nd act drag...

read a great article with Kevin McKidd (Rome HBO series, Dog Soldiers) talking about the near unintelligible Scottish regional dialect he grew up hearing his grandfather speak and that he was allowed to use for his character. i have Scottish friends, but the wife and i were both laughing because just when you thought you got a handle on it, you had to admit you had no clue.

finally watched midnight in paris. utilizes (somewhat) a concept woody allen introduced in a great short story of his from 1978-the kugelmass episode.
felt the movie could have been more and it ended rather abruptly but i give it a 7.5/8. allen continues to capture the sights, sounds and feel of the city
as few can. worth seeing this movie just for that.

also, staying with a parisian theme finally caught the red balloon (on netflix) from 1956 (i think), a short 30 min film. whimsical & fantastic. a 9/9.5

I saw The Amazing Spiderman and I liked it. I give it 8 out of 10.

I rewatched (is that even a word?) An American Werewolf in London (1981 ver.). Not as good as I remembered it to be after the first time I watched it. I give it 6 out 10 and only because of the way that director John Landis managed to sneak in some nudity into the film.

Just saw Bobcat Goldthwait's latest, "God Bless America." Definitely not for everyone, but being the type of person that is constantly taken aback by how ridiculous people can be, I found it a little cathartic. 8/10

I went to see the re-do of "Total Recall" last night. Save your money.

I give it a 2/5..... and that's just because I got a glimpse of a three-boobed woman. Way to long, way too chaotic, and - well...... stupid.

It boggles that mind how a movie with so much action can be so boring. I guess the formula in Hollywood is to string a bunch of CGI together for 2-1/2 hours and call it a day.

Yup. Remember when "Making of ______" programs were so interesting? They all suck now. Actors doing stuff in front of a green screen, or actors in a bare studio wearing bodysuits covered with reflective dots. Action sequences are so much better when you believe that, for example, James Bond (even if it's a stunt double) is really jumping off of the Hoover Dam.

I fell sound asleep during the second or third Matrix movie (I really don't remember -- it's the one that had a chase scene on a freeway) because I just didn't care about all the CGI. Give me a thousand Chinese Army extras instead of ten thousand computer-drawn ogres any day.

That being said, Dark Knight Rises is the best big Hollywood movie I've seen this year. 8/10 or better. Tragic, not campy, which is how I like the Batman universe.

Total Recall (2012). Rushed story, chaotic, slapdash, AND VIRTUALLY HUMORLESS!!!!!! Remember the first one with campy little one liners all over the place. 6/10. OK maybe 5/10.

Matewan 8/10

A superb drama with excellent acting by all. Fact-based storyline about 1920's WV coal miners' struggle to establish a union because of harsh treatment by the company.

The Dark Knight Rises - 7/10. Better than the first, worse than the 2nd. I wish they went more into showing the "life in "freed" gotham" rather than completely ignoring the topic.
