The cheaper less interesting version of the Blair Witch Project...

True Grit the remake. 7/10 I thought the end was a little weak but otherwise liked it.

^liked the remake too. better than i thought it would be. matt damon was an upgrade from glen campbell.
had there been singing involved...then not so much. loved both female leads in both versions.
thought jeff bridges did more with an iconic role than was possible. i give both versions an 8.5.

^^ The book by Charles Portis is very good too. Another Portis book that I really likes is Dog of the South

I also liked the re-make

true grit is one of the handful of book to movie experiences where i have equally enjoyed both because each was 'true' without obvious additions/subtractions. only other two coming to mind immediately are remains of the day and woman in the dunes.
true grit, however, 'survived' two film adaptations. what is les misérables on now? 3 or 4 versions of the movie?

#1 Don't get me started on the failings of numerous The Three Musketeers remakes.

busy lasy night. watched:

vive le tour-a 19 minute documentary by louis malle about the tour de france. various release dates as 1962 and 1966. footage would seem to support the former date. worth seeing with some shots of van looy, anquetil, bahamontes (and gaul + altig...i think) along with all the sweet vintage kit & bikes. if it were longer, i'd be tempted to give it a 8.5 but i can only go as high as a 7.

the most dangerous game from 1932 based on the famous short story. pretty dated for most of it. surprised this hasn't been remade actually (maybe it has and i missed it) with all the emphasis on rambo and whatnot the last 30 years. a 7.

the face of another-mid 60's japanese semi sci-fi drama with unresolved psychological/societal questions. ending sucked but liked overall. an 8/8.5. did prefer the same director's woman in the dunes much more tho...

pickpocket by robert bresson from 1959. didn't really care for the laconic lead although i tried. still enjoyable tho. an 8/8.5. watch those wallet and purses...they live.

Re Three Musketeers and Les Miserables, a few years ago I was reading The Count of Monte Cristo and thought Man, this would make an awesome movie! Quick google search reveals at least 11 versions. D'oh!

can't really blame filmmakers/studios wanting to 'update' the classic, timeless stories for each generation. now about that friday the 13th and twilight nonsense...

rainy day moviefest continued...

seven samurai from 1954-an 8.5. this is probably heresy but some judicious editing would bump it up to a 9/9.5 for me.

breathless from 1960-a 9. better than i remembered.

rashomon from 1950-an 8.5/9. a classic. some great black & white work...especially with the exterior temple shots.

the killing of a chinese bookie from 1976-a 9. underrated cassavetes classic. ben gazzara is fantastic.

The Mark of Zorro 1920 original silent version, with Douglas Fairbanks 10/10

Just a fabulous movie from start to finish. A stripped down classic with no CGI, no special effects, no color.....heck, no stinkin' dialogue. Just a delight to watch Zorro constantly bearding and otherwise antagonizing the bad guys until he makes thing right, saves the day, and wins the girl.

I watched Jesus Christ Superstar this afternoon. I'll give it a 7/10. Great music, a little odd with its juxtaposition of the modern and the ancient but insightful.

Stand-up Guys 8/10

Fairly predicable..... but with Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, and Alan Arkin you get some really solid performances, with no crappy CGI clutter to screw things up. Actual dialogue, and it works - who'd a' thunk it? . Really - with those three, how can you go wrong?

The ending was nice and well-shot, if not derivative of..... well, you watch it and see what you think.

A Good Day to Die Hard - a very generous 5/10

So many things wrong with this movie that I have no idea where to start.
