I agree Revolver was their best album, I think that the beatles were at the peak of their
songwriting, musically it's as complex as anything they'd done or would do.
My personal favorite album? Abbey Road, from Here Comes the Sun to The End
just flows perfectly, its also the album I'm most likely to spin when I'm listening to Beatles.

Thats the problem with MP3 players, the album is a lost art. When I put in the Beatles, it plays everything randomly. Before MP3s, I vaguely remember my favorite as White Album, although Taxman and Paperback Writer are a couple of my favorite songs.

I would probably go with Revolver.

I don't really think of the White Album as a Beatles album, since it seems to really be separate albums from individuals kind of strung together.

Tied between Rubber Soul and Revolver. Sgt. Pepper is overrated, but it was so good that it's still great. White Album is my pick for most overrated.

I love the early Beatles. "All My Loving" is still my personal favorite.

For me it's a tossup between Abbey Road and Revolver. As a kid it was always the Sgt Pepper intro.

I suppose I'd have to go with "with the Beatles". (That's the one that most of us knew as "Meet the Beatles" in the LP days.) Though "Please please me" might get my vote as well.

Their entire catalog was very, very good. But with time it's come to seem to me that their earliest stuff was the best.

Revolver is definitely the best musically. But Sgt. Peppers is the most complete album, something I fear is dying in this day of single song downloads.

Abbey Road is definitely my favorite. Probably followed by The White Album, Let It Be, Help!

Hate to be on the over-rated train, I think that Sgt. Peppers is my favorite... Definitely not by far though; Revolver and White Album are amazing as well!

I thought there was a poll?

Anyway it would be hard. I'd say it's a toss up between Revolver and Rubber Soul.

best album? I can't choose between Rubber Soul and Revolver. In my mind those albums are essentially equal in quality and are parts 1 and 2 of the same album.
    favorite album? Same as above
    most underrated? Let it Be
    most overrated? White Album

I'm not a big fan of The White Album, in comparison to the other albums of course. It's a spectacular album and blows away 99% of the albums out there, but when taken in comparison to the rest of the Beatles work it's simply, in my mind, "A collection of songs written by people who are also in The Beatles", if that makes any sense. There's no cohesion, it's all essentially solo work collected into an album. It's not a "Beatles" album. Fittingly it's the only one that doesn't show the band on the cover; perhaps they couldn't lie to themselves.

Plus it has the notorious distinction of containing the one and only Beatles song that I simply cannot listen to. You know the one.

what? you don't dig the proto-metal genius of paul and 'helter skelter?'
or... the nascent primal scream vibe of john and 'why don't we do it the road?'

'helter skelter' makes my top ten beatles tunes of all time and is likely in the top 3. so unlike anything paul had done or would do. so fresh and original. is there a better ending to a song than the now classic "i got blisters on my fingers!!!!!" ????????

I would say between rubber soul and abbey road. As for individual songs i think rubber should captures the essence of the beatles yet abbey road has that sweet medley like no other album I've ever heard.

They're great songs, and yes I love them. But that's just it, they're songs. Solo songs. When taken as a whole album it just seems disjointed, and that's what this thread was about, the albums in general.

Blisters on me fingers only shows up on the Stereo version, I'm used to the Mono so I don't often hear that. I truly consider Helter Skelter to be the genesis of "metal" music, so it is quite brilliant and genre-defining.

However, the one song I was referring to that is unlistenable was "Revolution #9", Lennon's dabble into experimental music that should have remained on his solo albums. I love the Beatles, I love Lennon, but this is just absolute crap.

Yeah, the Medley is one of my favorite album sides ever. It's like they got together, said "Hey guys, this is the end of us, so let's go out like the old days and give them something to really remember us by".

the white album is disjointed...that's what is so great about it.. it lacks the shiny veneer/sheen of all their other efforts (save let it be...for different reasons) and shows the beatles with their hair down so to speak. if george martin had his way, it would have been a single album but we would have missed out on some great stuff. if you're bored, try to edit the white album down to a single album of the standard (then) 40 minutes. see what you end up leaving off. once you're finished, see how you honestly feel about the album and where you would place it among their other albums. i totally understand how and what you feel about it being an album of solo songs. i tend to look at the white album as more of a affirmation of their upcoming solo careers vs an end of the beatles. that they were able to pull a nearly seamless abbey road out of their hat after this speaks volumes.

'revolution #9' has grown on me, i hafta admit. it certainly works wonders when i select it multiple times at bar jukeboxes.

who woulda thunk as paul as the godfather of metal? i kinda like that. move over tommie, richie, jimmy...macca the hesher.

i did a 'white album' compilation of the early solo beatles members stuff incorporating their 1970-1971 solo releases a while ago. not too shabby...

Revolver I think is the best album as an 'album', but white is the best that isn't really an album so much as a big collection of songs.

Yes, I do agree with Revolver...as the 'old' Beatles go it is simply the best execution around.

    As for songs...

You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
    Daytripper
    Michelle
    Nowhere Man
    Something
    Here Comes The Sun
    She's Leaving Home
    Penny Lane
    *Ballad Of John And Yoko

    songs in no particular order:

    'yer blues'

    'if i needed someone'

    'sexy sadie'

    'eleanor rigby'

'lucy in the sky with diamonds'

    'i've got a feeling'

    'helter skelter'

    'get back' (single version)

    'day in the life'

the entire song cycle on side two of abbey road beginning with 'because' and culminating with 'the end.'
i realize this may be cheating so if i hafta pick just one from that song cycle, it would be 'you never give me your money.'

full disclaimer: all the early early stuff is great but i prefer the rubber soul and later 'druggie' stuff way more.
