Hi all
I made it to Clinton Missoura. The ride this past week was in oppressive heat and humidery. Yesterday was not as bad but the day before I was close to being overcome with it. I drank a lot of fluids and rested as often as I could when I found shade.
I mentioned meeting up with Jeff and his son and buddies. When the big storm hit I was wondering where they were at that point. I figured them to be in the tunnel but it turned out they were past that and out in the open dealing with the rain and thunder and lightning. After meeting them for breakfast I went to the library fore mail and posting. I caught up to then later they were resting from the heat in the shade near a grocery. I went in and got orange juice a banana, and a box of straw berries to share with my friends. I tell ya on a hot day strawberries really hit the spot.
After a nice long rest we all took off together but since I was fully loaded I wasn’t able to keep up as they were traveling with a minimum of gear. It was ok I figured to catch them again next time they took a rest in the shade someplace. When I caught up most of us were low on water so Me and Jeff went up the hill to the town and filled water bottles, by now the heat index was 103-105 according to the weather report I heard later. In this heat you need to pay special attention to how you are feeling and take I easy.
The ride into Sedalia was getting hotter and I sweated out the fluids as fast as I could take them in. Made it into this town and got lost looking for the camp ground and finally decided to ask for directions I was a mile off got situated for the night but could not sleep well due to the heat.
I got up early got breakfast in a local dinner then hit it I had about 40 miles to go to Clinton. The end of this trail and 2 nights treating myself to an air conditioned motel and some well deserved good sleep.
When I got there I found a directory of motels first one I called they fellow and I hit it off well on the phone he gave me directions that sounded complicated so I told him I may be calling him back if I got lost. It turned out to be easy the place was nice clean and fairly cheap. It had a pool and walking distance to Wall mart to re supply the food bad.
I found a good way to clean the drive train with out a cleaning tank to use. I can buy a spray can of break part cleaner for about $1.50 at wall mart or just about any larger store. I take the chain off and spray it good rinse it off then wipe it down with rags and let it hang dry then saturate it with lube and let it hang as I work on the rest of the bike. I clean the derailleur’s and lube them then the chain rings brake parts cables etc. Wipe the chain and reinstall it and make adjustments The bike was filthy with dirt and grime from riding all those miles on a rails to trails route. With that done and satisfied the bike was clean and lubed and adjusted I went to dinner and go a plate of spaghetti supreme and a couple quarts of cold water. When I was walking back to the hooch I saw the bank sign and it was 94 degrees at 8:30 pm that’s an idea of the heat I m in here in Missoura.
Weather man says cooler temps and lower humitery coming this after noon for the rest of the week
I am headed farther south in the morning on Hy 13 to Hy 126 don’t know if I can make it in one day or 2 depends on the wind the terrain and the heat once at hy 126there is a cyclists hostile to stay the night at. Then it is west from there into Kansas.
In case you want to look on the map and see the route last week here is a list of towns id gone through I was following the Mississippi till i got to the Missoura river. You already know I was in Hannibal then into Louisiana, Eollia, Troy, Wright City, then in Dutzo I got on the Katy trail and followed the Missoura river to Clinton.
I got some pics processed but cant up load them from a public library computer I might send them to my brother in law and ask him to upload some or wait till I finish the ride.
So it seems to me another leg is finished the time on the Katy trail was nice meeting other cyclists and as one chapter closes another opens I’m off to see what is over the next hill and around the next corner.
