Hey,
Got too many things to tell you about and not enough time left on the library computer so I have to pick and choose which ones to type.

I m in Newton Public Library in Kansas. The weather took a turn yesterday. It started out nice and cool then got hot I had 80 miles to make since there is nothing but open land between here and where I was the day before. The wind was a head wind and I was headed right into it.

I stopped in the first little town and mailed back a jersey I didn’t need and was taking up room in one of my bags. It didn’t weigh much but room is a premium. I didn’t want ot toss it in the trash since it was a nice jersey from Utah trip last march.

Ok back on the road and I knew there was a town called Cassoday about 30 some miles out and there was a town park I could camp in if I wanted to hold short. I got there and it was a real nice park but much too early to hold up for the day it was just noon. I went into the gas station/ café nice clean air conditioned place. The had some kind of Mexican dish made up for lunch so I had one and a big bottle of water. The local postmaster and clerk were also eating so I joined them.

Time to go and the wind was picking up I had 38 miles to go into the wind this afternoon.. The weather got hotter and hotter and clouds were building big thunder heads in the west. I noticed this is big Memonite area. About half way I was getting overcome by the heat and saw an abandoned church with a picnic nick table under a roof like structure. It provided some well needed shade for a nice rest. I ate one of the last two bagels I had and spread some peanut butter on it. In a while I decided it was time to go.

The sky was looking threatening now and I was gong to camp 8 miles out f town. I wasn’t paying attention and missed the turn to the county park and ended up at the outskirts of town by now I was not pretty exhausted and due to the approaching storm I wasn’t interested in riding back 8 miles to camp in the storm . I spotted a motel and the price was 28 bucks I stayed there last night. About midnight or so the storm got violent heavey rain strong winds and I was happy to be inside even though it did cost 28 bucks.

The day before was an interesting day too. I left out of Wallnut KS where I slept in the town park the town had friendly and fun people but this park was the pits pretty run down and the bathrooms were just plain disgusting! I had trouble sleeping since the coyotes were howling all night and then at 5:30 am the lady at the restraunte set off the alarm going in and forgot the code so it went on for a good hour and a half till the alarm company reset the code from there home office in some other town. I figured it was tiome to get up then. I headed over and she asked if she woke me up? I just smiled and said no I thought the alarm was your way of telling me the coffee was ready ha ha ha

I headed out and got into Chanute nice place and I wished I would have been able to make it there the day before since the park had a pool and showers as well as a place to pitch the tent. I headed to the grocer to get some fruit and cough syrup since I was still sick with a cold. I met two old disabled vets hanging out in front of the store on a bench We got to talking and had some things in common from out time in the service to talk and laugh about. Soon I went in and got my stuff. When I cam out they both had a box of Krispy Kream doughnuts in their hands one was smiling and said look we got a Christmas present have one. Now I am not one to eat doughnuts but how could I refuse these down and outers offering to share their new fond wealth. We talked some more and everyone that came by seemed to know them and stopped to talk some. Time to go now

Another guy I met gave me a short cut to avoid some bad traffic and save 5 miles. There was nothing but open land again and 15 miles out was a gas station. I pulled in and got some cold water and some more directions to a park to camp in.

The road was long and hilly who ever said Kansas was flat wasn’t in the area I am in. I was about to run out of water and I came into a little town and 3 people were on the porch so I asked and got water. The funy thing is in these towns out here where it is so hot and or humid during the day it is like a ghost town you don’t see anyone their all inside in the air conditioning I guess but today was a little later and they were coming out now.

Once I got to the park I set up the camp and got a shower. I met a fellow (cant remember his name) who was traveling east with his friend named Giz they started in Florence Oregon and some place along the route their wife’s came out in their cars and are now driving and carrying all the gear and supporting them. Man that has got to be nice they were real nice guys and I sat in their camp for a couple hours talking about the road abd bike and other stuff. In the morning everything was dry and I got an early start I left by 7 am and they were already gone.

Oh time is up I got to go thanks for stopping by

Phil and I look forward to your posts. Our conversation is always, "Did George send a post today?" Sounds like you are having quite the adventure. Its been cool here today, (Tues.) with highs only in the 60's, and Wed. night, 40's are predicted. Lemon and molasses in hot water is great for your cold. Take care.

Hi George! I'm so glad I got to check the forum today. I was two days behind. I didn't know you caught a cold. I sure hope you're feeling better soon. Any access to tea and honey or Vitamin C? Where are you headed to next? Miss ya'!

Hey George,
Sounds like your trip is going well. Love reading your adventures. Gpt back from the wedding in Minnesota. It went real well. Missed YOU though. I have pictures. Rudeen was able to get there. She was amazed when I told her you were out biking across the country. She thought I was talking about a motorcycle. She couldn't believe it when I explained that it was a bicycle. I got the disk you sent. Don and I have been trying to post the pictures, but can't figure out how to do it. If anyone can give me instructions, I will get the pictures on as soon as I can. Keep up the great work. Keep on writing. We are thinking about you everyday. Dad wants to know when you are going to be back. I told him "when he gets here".
Love, Sue
