Guess where I sleptd last night? I ll tell you later if i dont forget. A couple days ago i was treating myself to a motel after a ruff 60 miles into some cross wind. About 7:30 pm a knock on the door and a guy on a bike named mike showed up to meet and talk. he is from east coast and have been riding since eralt july. he was hooked up with another guy and they slepted in a city park in a big city one night. Thats my first rule abou5t city parks camping AVOID THE BIG TOWNS! so the other guy gets drunk in a bar and brings truble back with him there is a big fight and the one guy ends up in the hospital badley beaten. Mike helps out anbd gets a black eye before the cops show up. Then he stays in town an extra day to help then takes off on his own.

i didnt think much of his story or the circumstances surrounding it. he wanted to ride together io the morning. I though it might be good to ride with some one. then in the morning i figured to start early and if he was ready ok but if not i wasnt going to waite. I planned to go 60 miles to Ordway and spend the night and the following day into peaublo.

i got breakfast and was about to leave when Mike knocks on the door and asks if i am ready? so we take off together. i noitice right off the bat he likes to talk and is non stopat first it is entertaining butafter a while it got to be jsut noise. We semed to pick up a bit of atail wind and were cruising between 16-19 mph eating up the miles. After 25 miles we stopped for more water and a chat with the store clerk. then moved on. the next stop was sugar city for more water and was 50 miles or so and the stop for the day would be made at about noon.

I started to entertain thoughts of going all the way into peaublo making for a 120 mile day. What the heck as long as the tail wind kept up and my legs were holding up ok it would be nice to make it today. We got lunch, Mike and I and i was begining to like the guy for who he was although on a different page than i am.

we looked at the sky, thunder heads were building in the west and we stil had the wind we looked at the map and there were 3 places iont he next 60 miles to get out of the weather if needed but nothing else.We took off withhigh hopes.

The first 20 miles flew buy and we were both quiet just sort of meditating on the bike as we pedaled. then anbother 10 miles went by and the road took a slight turn and we now had a cross wind. This slowed the spped down a little bit to 10 mph, zi was calculating in my head at 10 mph i could still make peaublu before it got dark.

about this time the scenery changed like id hoped for more trees appeared, and more rolling hills. then the sky startee to get dark really dark and the temprature dropped a bit. I could occasionally see lightning in the distance but it was a long way off. Then it got darker and looked very threatining the town of Boon was still 15 miles away. Mikes has half the load i have and soon pulled away from me tryiong to make Boon before the storm. The lightning got closer as well as the thunder. i was going aqt about 9 mph and was at 84 miles for the day so I was feelinga little fatigue as well.

Finially i made boon there was a general store/ cafe. We went in and got a cold drink to waite out the storm. Joe the owner was a friendly gou and most everyone that wandered in was friendaly and talkitive.
Joe gave us soem directions and advice then after about 30 minutes we decided to go .

By now the sky was really looking bad but we had about 24 miles to go only problem was the wind siufted and now was a head wind! Mike left me in the dust but i kept riding and looking at the sky it started to drizzle a little. I could see the sky in the south looked really bad but had passed over us and i thought we were safe for now. Then with in 30 minutes i could see that storm changing directions and comming back toiwrds our path. I was on the look out for a place to duck into if needed the lightning bolts were scarry and the thunder was LOUD and crashing i was counting the seconds between the lightning and thunder to get a read onhow close the storm was.

When the hy made a junction into peaublo ther was 20 miles to go the head wind was fearce now and Mike was waiting for me there. I said " look at that sky , it is really ugly man"! and it is headed this way and getting closer" i saw a pole barn accross the hy and said I think we should go to that farm hous and see who ownes tha pole barn and see if we can set up the tents in it for the night. His reply was " i M going to hammer into town" I said suit your self and good luck"

now iam about to tell you where i slept and with who ha ha h a i went up to the house it had a lot of junk cars in the yard and a bare fiited kid came out then the grand ma came out i intrtoduced myself and asked it they owned that pole barn? they did then i said the storm is comming very fast and looks ugly would it be ok to set up my tent int he barn i would be any truble and would be gone in the morning. They said ok but i would be sghareing it with 2 muels and a goat i asked itf they were friendly and they said yes.

Tow of the young barefooted boys took me to the barn and then the grand ma made them come back to the house. i set up the tent i was exhusted it was exactly 100.5 miles for the day about 20 miles short of pueblo. About the time i got set up it started to really get loud with thunder and lightning then all heck broke loose and it down poured i fuigured Mile must be getting wet but someone might pick him up and give a ride. the down pour didnt let up it jsut kept comming and being in a metal building it sounded like a frieght train there were no doors ont he ends of th ebuilding so wind was blowing through.

one of the dogs came and got friendly thats allways good to make friends with the dog. then after a whle the two muels came in and i tried to make friends with them i gave them botha pop tart to eat but they didnt want to get too close. we hung out for a couple hopures then just before dark the dog came back and for simne reason decided to chase the musel out of their own home so i had it to my self. then the dog went home go figure.

it was hard to sleep the rain just kept comming doen and it was loud and bright lightning and thunder it must have rained a good 2 inches or better finially at about 3 am it quit and got real quiet then the two muels came back froim where ever they went. i could see their shadow on the tent wall from the yard light so i opened the door and said welcome back he haw!

First light i got up and packed up the dog came back and chased the muels out again. to get from the barn to the road was through a yard orf deep mud i pushed the bike but it quickly go caked with mud so bad i couldnt even turn the wheels. i got to the road and used a bandana soaked in puddle water to try to clean it good enough not to wreck the break pads or rims. i got going and it was a light rain now and hoped it ould help clean the bike

10 miles out ther was a gas station and i stopped for coffee and conversation then i missed a turn and went 5 miles out of my way but when i finially decided to ask directions there was an easy way to get to where i was going I found a wash rack and cleaned up the mud from the bike. got a cheap motel for a coupel days to rest work on the bike and get ready to roll again into the mountians.

so thats where i slept and who i slept with but i still wonder what happened to th4e goat he never showed up at all.

Well George, you had me worried in that story a little. I won't say which part worried me. Ha-Ha. I'm glad you survived the storm and the night in the barn!!!

    Catfish, you are a hoot!

Still, I don't know if you should broadcast those kinds of stories. Isn't beastality against the law in some states? Some people might misinterpret, and how embarrassing would it be to get picked up by the cops for copulating with the farm animals?

I'm glad to see you're having fun. Me, I'd be in tears... but you're certainly a scrapper, huh?

    Keep those stories coming!

P.S. Went to the Downers Grove Criterium this past weekend. Ventura crashed in the final turn just about 150 meters from the finish. It was heartbreaking.

The mules probably weren't interested in any more 'poptarts' (whatever you want to call it) after eating that goat!!!!
