havre and malta
Got into havre the road was long soem rolling hills the thing that made the day difficult was the head wind at one point it became brutall. my handle bar bag mounting bracket broke and i was about to loose the bag so i tied it back on . I knew there was a bike shop in Havre so i figured to get some parts to fix it or buy a new one. I stoped about 20 miles out for pancakes. then continued the first 35-40 miles went by quick then the wind picked up it was a 65 mile day. I finially made it to the hy 2 cutoff and it was just another 5 or so miles into havre. When i got to the bike shop there i saw the guy had a lot of stuff but really had nothing if you can follow that. so i took the brackt apart and saw what was brokeen and it is just cheep plastic andnot much can be done I borrowed some duct tape and now it dont look pretty but it will hold maybe the next big bike shop is in minot North Dakota. if it holds up till then Ill just use itthe way it is if i have more trubble then ill think about a new one.
I was really tired and hungry so i took a campsite at a rv park this one was quite as far as rv parks go. it was right next to the Rail road yard and at 3 am they began hooking up freight cars and got noisy for a half hour then got quiet again.
When i got up the tent and fly was wet with dew it didnt get too cold that night and the sun was out so things dried up quickly as i ate my brekfase of oatmeal and cofie.
hit the road at 8:45 i knew it was 90 or so miles into malta or i could pull up short 40 miles in the next town. I was making good speed today 11-13 mph the wind was calm. the temp was cool to start but withen an hour and a half i was out of my jacket and leg warmers.
In The town of chinnok i stoped for pancakes there ere a few old cow boys at the counter so i sat with them and the local preachjer walked in and joined us..
i got going and was rolling along enjoying the day, i was noticing that sionce i started flying the flag i am getting lot more respect from the truckers as they are now moving over a little more and many drivers in both cars and trucks are giving me a toot onthe horn.
i got to the last place i could possibly camp at and was feeling good so decided to go all the way into malta. at one point the road got narrow no shoulder to ride on and some jerks came by and tried to scare me hollering and one threw a bottle at me but there isnt much scare left in me anymore and their aim was so bad the bottle never came close obviously drunken idiots....
kept going watching ther mile markers go by pretty quick checking the time and figureing that id make malta late afternoon.
about this time the wind kicked up head windof course and slowed me just a bit but i just put more strength into the pedal strokes to keep the mph at about 12 and the cadance at about 80-85 rpm. now i got into some rolling hills but nothing too bad
rolling into Malta i stoped in the truck stop to buy some duct tape toi repair the bracket but they only had this hudge roll for 10 dollars, i noticed the sport shop was still open and went in and asked if they had any. thy said no but the truck stop did then i told them i didnt need a 10 dollar roll just a few pieces the guy had some and gabve me it to use as much as i needed.
I asked him if he remembered me from last year i reminded him thay i was looking for stove fuel and didnt need a whole gallon and he took me over to his house and filled my 22 oz fuel bottle from some he had in his garage. he did remember then we got talking about biking, hunting fishing ect for a while.
today I am hanging out here recovering form a 96 mile day yesterday i should have rode arround a little and made it a 100 mile day but i am not into any sort of records you know!! so i was satisified with what id done.
tomorrow i head to glassgo a 70 mile day
