    getting to minot

This should have been just one long day 95 miles but it took 3 days of extreemly hard riding. Left out of williston at 8:30 am. It was 15 miles north to the place that hy 2 split and went due north. the north wind was howlling at 20 -25 mph and it was COLD!! i was cruising at the breakneck speed of 3-4 mph, occasionally making it all the way up to 6 mph.

the first time i stoped I looked at the map for a short cut. and found that by taking soem side roads i could zig and zag and go east and north and east again and still come out at a place on hy 2 near the town odf RAY. i found the cut off and right off noticed that being out the the direct head wind it was slightly warmer and eaiser to pedal i was now going 6-10 mph . about 4 1/2 miles into the short cut i saw a sign saying "PAVEMENT ENDS"
so ok i got some gravel to ride on soon there was another sign saying"BRIDGE OUT AHEAD" sometime you can still get accross on a bike so i kept going but there it was baricades and no bridge at all.

This short cut cost me some time and miles. I figured to keep going into the north wind till 1:30 pm then if i haddent made the split by then Id turn arround and head back to williston riding the wind.

When i got to the split it was nice to be on track and it was only 1m so it took lile 4 hrs to go 19 miles geeeeeze. the road was kinda hilly but not bad I stoped and ate a bannana and part of a stale bagal i had. slowley the wind rdirection changed to north east so it was again a struggle.

I had abandoned the idea of making minot today, and was thinking I couldnt even make Stnley either, I looked again at the map and figured i could make RAY befor exhustion set in. Ray is a small town and didnt know what was there. Out side of town I decided to try to camp there were 3 trees when i unrolled my tent the wind took it and it went sailing the thing that saved me was it got hung up in one of the 3 trees in north dakota.

I roled it back up and moved on It was too cold to camp any way when i get to RAY i asked if there was anyplace to get a room (if ther haddent been i was going to try to hitch hike to stanley)

There was one run down beat up motel so i headed over there. I met Dick and his wife, the owners i instantly became friends wioth Dick as he is an aoirforce vet also so we had lots to talk about he also told me he was going to minniapolis in the morning and would give me a lift if i wanted. i said Id have to think about it.

think about it all night then in the morning i told him I perfer to keep riding the bicycle at least to minot .

as i got riding it was colder than yesterday but the sun was trying to come out. when it finially came out it was not so cold. but this wind doesnt it ever stop blowing and from the east???
Stoped at a rest area and warmed up a bit then got out the stioove and made some coffie. got going again and arrived in the town of Stanley at 2pm. Knowing i couldnt make another 57 miles to minot I asked about any place to get a room between here and there. There wasnt anything for 40 miles so i stooped early and stayed instanley.

Right accross the way was Grandma rudy,s cafe Hey with a name like this how can you go wrong? Well granny rudy must be long gone cause the food was so bad i got sick and there is no grandma in the world that would be that terrible of a cook.

early next morning i set off for minot going to make it what ever the cost. I have a friend here that i can stay with. Marlynn. The first 15 miles went by quickly the sun was out it was cold but i was warm enough to be almost comfortable. the wind wasnt as bad as the last two days but still there it seemes today it is south east. made it to a town that had a cafe at 35 miles out so i stoped and got lunch of a hot sandwich and a quart of ornge juice and a hunk of cheeze .a coupla people stoped by to talk and said it is all down hill from here I just said yea right!! heard tyhat too many times allready.

the last 15 or so miles into minot were bioth hard and easy the wind was getting stronger but i could see the sky line oif minoit and that made me keep going I turned onto broadway and cruised into marlynn's place of business I sat ther for about an hour drinking coffie and talkin about old times and then she showed me to my room.

SO i had serious thoughts about quiting here in minot but now that i am here i think iLL keep going at least to fargo about 6 days riding from here maybe 7 dont know what ILL do from there might catch a train or might try to rent a car or maybe keep going oin the bike I got to take small goals and make them athen go on from there

    Cat,

A rough couple of days, WOW! I felt your pain with the North Dakota wind when we rode up there! We didn't have the cold though, just the heat!
Good to hear you found the fabled 3 trees in N.D.! We must have missed them.
May the weather get warmer and calmer for you Cat.

    hey Gus:
I remember riding through north dakota a year ago in early august. The wind was there but not nearly like it has been. I think that business about wind allways blowing from west to east is just a bunch of BULL anyway it has calmed down a bit today. That heat an humidity you rode in would have zaped all my energy. I can take the heat but when it gets humid i just shut down.

making progress got 2,150 miles in now thinking of changing focus a little bit.

You're so right. And it did too. Zapped me badly! We still had a great time.
