Organizing an event

I would like to organize an event for next year. I live in the Salt Lake City area of Utah. I would like for the event to be a road race/charity event. The race would be 1 day and go from Ogden to Sandy.

Does anyone have any experience orchestrating an event like this? If so, do you have any suggestions on where to start? I'm assuming I need to put the logistics on paper and go to the different cities or counties that we would pass through. How to butter up the powers that be?

Any good suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I was looking for another thread, and ran across this one. I think some of your question is answered on other threads here.

As described, it sounds like a one way ride. Needs to be a loop, so you wind up where you started but don't have to backtrack on the same road. Or at least if you expect a large turnout.
