Pan Mass Challenge 2008
https://www.pmc.org/
I'm looking to do this ride in support of the Dana Farber foundation. In 2007, the PMC donated 100% of every rider-raised dollar directly to cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. It takes place August 2 & 3rd this year. For the long ride (192 miles), the minimum fundraising required is $4000.
I have never done a ride that required fundraising before. I've done charity rides where I made a donation or the registration fees went to charity. How hard is it to get this amount of donations? I would like to support this foundation, but I am afraid of being stuck contributing $1000 or more if I can't get enough fundraising support.
Any advice from people that have successfully fundraised for rides like this?

Don:
I did the PMC last year, did the two day route from Sutrbridge to P'town. Last year, the minimum fundraising committment was $3600. I came up short by $850, and had to cut a check. It was worth it, not just for the ride, but for the entire experience, the fundraising, the Pedal Partner Program, PMC Night at Fenway, the people you meet and the friends you make.
This year, the minimum for my route has been raised to $4,000, and I'm doing it again.
Start the fundraising early. Start now. Contact everybody you know. Plan a tag sale or two. Solicit businesses. Beg, borrow and plead. Everybody in the northeast knows about the Jimmy Fund and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, so that is a good lead in. Few people realise that the PMC generates nearly half the entire yearly budget for the Jimmy Fund. And what other charity of any kind do you know of where there is a record of 100% going directly to the charity?
It is an experience you will never forget. It is definitely not a competetive event. You will get support from other riders as well as spectators all along the route.
Hopefully, with some of the things I am doing this year, I won't have to write the big check again. But if I do, well, I know it's a great cause, and I feel I have to do a certain amount of charity giving myself each year. Can't think of a better place to put my money.

A good place to start is with your Rolodex of business contacts. I'd do a mailing to all of your contacts.
You might also get a list of local businesses who are members of the Worcester Chamber of Commerce and do a mailing with that.
Good luck!

Have a blast! We'll be riding Sturbridge to P-town. This will be my 8th year, the last 5 with my son. We hit up the same folks each year and it is getting harder. One can only go to the well so often. It will likely be our last as riders. It is a combination of serious, good cause and mardi gras celebration.

Fellow PMC-ers ,
Each year fund raising gets harder and as mentioned a couple of months ago; getting cold feet over $8,000 commitment (my son and I).
I'm back in the saddle again, motivated. Do the same:
