I need your help in the fight against cancer!

Hello!

Ok...so here's the skinny. I signed up for Team In Training. They are a part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. What I've done is, I have made the commitment of training for and participating in the2009 Philadelphia Triathlon on June 28th! I'll be racing for and fund raising for the fight against leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers!!!!!

This all sorta came about when I decided to do a tri and began training on my own. Then a friend mentioned Team In Training. I did some digging on them and what they do...and I was sold! I get to fulfill a personal goal AND I get to do something good, something bigger than myself. I'm excited!!!!

Since joining, I have become acuately aware of how many people have been affected by cancer in general and leukemia in particular. Relatives of close family friends...loved ones of co-workers...friends of friends...and I had no idea until recently.

I need all your help though. I've gotten a REALLY late start on my fund raising due to work, persoal life drama, etc. I just reached out to a bunch of friends and family...and I think I'll be receiving some cash and check donations shortly. But my social circle is small. And, so, I'll have to rely in part on the random generosity of good people like you!!!!

If you have it within your heart and within your means to donate anything...$5, $8, $20, $100....please consider donating. Every dollar helps me and helps the fight against cancer.

I'll be updating my donation page with pictures of my honored hero hopefully within the next day or two! And maybe a pic of me as well. For the cycling community, I'll post pics of my tri bike build as soon as I can!!!!

Here's my donation page: http://pages.teamintraining.org/mi/philtri09/jwon

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:thumb:

you guys are awesome!!!! i'll be donating $500 of my own money. my mother and a few close friends will donate several hundred. people at work are helping me by giving me all their emply bottles for return (which is no trivial sum!!!!!).

it's wierd...i just had no idea so many people were affected until i got involved with team in training. and now i'm all about helping in any way i can!!!!!

thanks again!

Make sure you wear one of these wrist bands when you ride:

My sister, a cancer survivor, saw mine and said she wished she'd had one when she went through chemo.

As a widow of a cyclist who died from Lymphoma before his 50th birthday, I have to say, if you want to train for a triathlon, go pay for it yourself. If you want to help cure cancer, send money to the cancer research center near you.

Well, I'm donating at least $500 of my own money...which is the most I could probably afford regardless of what I was doing. But honestly, if not for Team In Training...I wouldn't have become aware of this particular need...and they cancer research would have gotten $0 from me. Not to mention that my efforts to raise awareness will get others to donate to...some friends and family are donating for my personl benefit...others are donating because of those they know that have been affected by cancer...and others still because they didn't know there was a need for donation but became aware through me. And this is money that otherwise would probably have remained in the hands of me and all the other people that are willing to help.

I actually WAS going to just train for a triathlon on my own and/or with the local tri club. But I thought this would be a better thing to do.

:( I guess I'm surprised that there's opposition to organizations like the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and Team In Training. But I'm very sorry for you loss. :(

It's an interesting viewpoint. I'm dong the London to Paris to raise money for the MS Trust and the min sponsorship if £1,250 of which £850 goes to the charity. So far I've raised £1,740 and will likely break the £2K. Even though a company is getting £400 the charity is getting far more in total than I could ever donate on my own or persuade people to do through wanting to.

It seems to be a fact of charity that the best way to raise money is to do something most people would find impossible or too unpleasant. Thankfully I didn't admit to anyone that I'm really looking forward to this ride and think it will be great fun,

$0.75 of every $1.00 I raise goes directly to funding research, financial assistance for patients, or whatnot. Only 25% goes to paying their employees, overhead costs, the triathlon, etc. I think that's quite good among charity organizations.

I'm very serious about this. If it's me getting to compete in a triathlon that keeps people from donating...I'll donate $1000 of my own money. No joke. That way every penny you donate will go towards actual research, actual care, actual financial assistanceship! :)

I'm wondering how this is not spam. I'm a big supporter of Relay for Life - but I wouldn't spam a forum for support.

Actually the number that really reaches the charity is closer to 56%. Your 75% number includes the money that TNT returns to the athletes in the form of parties, free travel, entry fees, etc.

We had a thread on TNT about a month or two ago.

If you want to raise money, do it on your own. TNT isn't as great as they want you to think it is.

I was told by their reps that the 75% of after all costs...that's the amount that actually reaches researchers, hospitals, etc. It is also the figure that's been quoted as reaching their actualy destination in various sites/publications. It'd be had to believe that would blatantly, patently spew unequivocable lies to the entire world.

But even if it's not 75%, I still would not have the ability to rais any money without them. It's hard enough raising money telling people you're doing it for the Leukemia And Lymphoma Society or Team In Training. I can't imagine how hard it would be to just ask people for money to fund cancer research...and when they ask what organization I'm with, my reply would be, "No one. I'm just doing it on my own." Tough sell...

Much as I hate to have to move it, as it's a worthy cause, it does need to be in the charity subforum. Sorry. :(

Please take a look at the other thread. I posted a link to an article that explains the 56% number.

Are those numbers still accurate? That was from nearly a decade ago.

And as I said above, even if the percentage is not 75%, cancer research is getting a lot more money with TNT than without. Because without them, I wouldn't have anyone to back my word...I would never have become aware or involved...etc etc. So instead of the $4000 I will hand over to them by June 28th, they would have gotten $0.

And, if you read this thread, I offered to put in $1000 of my own cash (I was going to put in $500 until someone complained that I'm getting to participate in a triathlon as a result of my fund raising). And I even said that one of my reasons for doing this is purely personal. I'm not trying to hide anything.

I want to have fun. I want to do something good. Thus...TNT.

Part of the 25% goes to coaching, jerseys, and support while out on the road.
