Ride of Silence

Hello All,

Anyone here ever been involved in a Ride of Silence (May 20 this year (2009)) as a participant or organizer? I was hoping to ride in northwest Indiana next month, but the Chesterton ride of last year won't be repeated this year. So, is the organization of one of these so easy, that someone who hasen't even ridden in one yet could pull it off?

TIA,

Ride of Silence

Randy,

You might say I'm involved with the Ride.

Yes, you can pull it off!! In 2005, I organized Grand Rapids MI 1st ever Ride, in just 5 weeks, with minimal support from one member of my local bike club. We had 90+ riders attend.

Last year we were at 150, handed out 110 free Ride of Silence / Share the Road T-shirts.

This year I'm hoping to top 200, and will be handing out 150 free shirts in G.R.

Please contact me at the email address noted below, and I'll help support your Ride in Chesterton, part of my role with the National organization.

ps. thought you and others might enjoy this, to show we truly are global, and ride with cyclists worldwide on the eve of the Ride. Hong Kong is again registered.

so, what is the 'ride of silence'? I got a pin from a bike store that says that on it. Does it have anything to do with 'Day of Silence'?

It's like a Moment of Silence tribute to all cyclists who have died on the road- but instead of standing with our heads bowed, we got on our bikes and ride.

Yeah, it would have been good to post a link to the website with the original question...

You can find it all here: Ride of Silence

I would like to participate in this, but it seems to be always on a Wednesday night- is that intentional? Not a good night for me, otherwise I'd be out there.

Yes, it is intentional. The day of week, date, and time are observed internationally. Check the RoS website for more info.

Yes always on a Wed. eve., with the exception of Rides in the Southern Hemisphere which occur on the following Sat., at 10 AM, for rider safety. Every 6 out of 7 years the Ride occurs during National Bike Safety Week.
