Philly Livestrong Challenge 2009
Only 28 more days until LSC Philly. How is everyone doing? Are you ready?
Fundraising has been a little slow for me. I guess it's the same all over, people are feeling the effects of the economy.

ready or not, I'm doing it. I haven't ridden much longer than 50 miles (doing the century), but I feel pretty good after that distance. I was doing pretty well with fundraising and had a little over $700 until today, when somehow I ended up with a total of $825 in additional donations. I'm still amazed

I'll be there. coming up with a friend who grew up there, but now lives in SC. We've been doing a fair amount of training to get ready, but still probably not where we need to be...We did an easy rolling 75 mile ride yesterday to get ready..... Looking forward to the visit.

I'm ready to go riding wise.
Fund raising has been slow this year, and I too blame the economy. I need to send out another mass email this week and get a few more dollars. That's what it's all about. The bike portion is the fun part for accomplishing the goal to raise money for fighting cancer

It will no doubt be harder for us this year because we've ridden less. But having done the 45 mile last year, having a good idea of what we're capable, we're ready.

I was having my best biking season ever..of my 2.5 yrs riding. Had signed up for the 100 mile ride then had a non cycling related accident on July 18. Ended up fracturing my fibula just above the ankle so I'm in a cast. Still have 3 wks to go and the Dr. said he doubted I'd be able to make the Aug. 23 date. So, last wk I reluctantly canceled my hotel res. I thought is was a bad sprain as I could still walk on it but with much pain. When the Dr. said the x-ray showed a fracture, I could have cried because I knew that meant cast.
The worst part is I felt I let down those that had donated to my fundraising. They understood and said it was a still a good cause. Now I guess I can begin training for next yrs......still bumming though. Have a great ride everyone.

I plan on it grahny. I also thought about trying something else or at least volunteering, but with the travel and 6 wks of lost income, except for disability pay, I thought I better just withdraw and plan for next yr. Be sure and give me a full report of the ride when it's done.

This is my fourth. I am very excited. I think my legs are ready. I weigh 20 lbs less than last year. Maybe I won't have to walk up that big hill this year!

roadrider63 - I'm sorry to hear about the injury and change of plans. I hope you have a complete recovery, as quickly as can be expected. I'm not sure where you live, but would switching to the event in Austin in October be an option?
My reality also didn't match up to my plans. I had a great winter and spring, in regard to training. I had 1,000 miles in by early May, and I had also been doing weight training and yoga. I had lost 10 pounds and been feeling pretty good until I started developing some hip pains. To make a long story short, I'm in physical therapy now and I've had to cut back my training. I will most likely end up doing the 45 mile ride instead of the 100 miles that I had planned.
In regard to the fund raising, it's been a mixed bag. I started early, but didn't want to pester people too often. I have also been "distracted" by dealing with a chronically leaking window, a slacker land lord, a resulting mold problem, and needing to find a new place to live - kind of time consuming, to say the least! I raised some money by auctioning off a Postal jersey and a LiveStrong Challenge bag on eBay. I'm at about $800, far short of my goal of $3,000. All things considered, if I beat last year's amount of $1,115, I'll be happy. Still, I'm looking forward to the event!

I'll be out there again this year on the 70 mile course, but this time with a fellow alumnus from my high school.
Training hasn't been good this year with most of the summer being rainy. I'll just be a bit slower this year.
We'll be in green and white semi-custom Voler jerseys with our school seal and a large green falcon on the front.
Hard to believe it's just over a week away which also means the closing of summer...

I was reading some stuff on the LAF site and they were talking about the course and how you could encounter fast moving traffic and busy streets? I just assumed the course would be closed to traffic? Are they talking about crossing streets that are not part of the course?

Last year I did the 100 and didn't have to stop at one intersection. The roads were closed in the morning but they can't keep them closed forever. So as you get later in the day there are cops at every intersection and they stop the cars and allow you the right of way. I guess they are just telling you to be careful but I don’t think you have to worry.

The roads are only closed right out of the start, but that's it - the whole course is not closed off to traffic, there just isn't a lot of traffic in that area in the early morning. All the intersections are controlled so you can ride through.

So where is everybody meeting up at? I suggest the front of 2nd lane of the 100 miler riders.
I’ll be riding my Yellow and Black Scott wearing a White jersey. And you?

You should be fine to roll out with the 100 mi riders. They have lanes set up for each distance, so just hop on in the 100 mi lane to roll out first. It's always nice to meet a few new BF'ers at the beginning, with the understanding that everyone is going to roll out at their own pace.

tasr... good to see you'll be there again. Front of the 100 mile riders, right side, just like last year works for me. I will be in my black/white giordana jersey... probably this exact kit:

I'm doing the 100 miler...Gonna try and get up near the front for the start. I should be wearing either my Red/Black 'Rock Racing" jersey ... OR my Red/Black Bike Forum 50+ jersey ... Riding Specialized.
Give me a holler if you see me out there....I'll be doing a 15 mph avg for the most part.... Not sure about some of the climbs though....
We're leaving SC around 7:00am tomorrow morning.

I imagine there could be more than one black and red Fuji Professional out there; I hope I don't call out "Hey oldfujiman!" to the wrong guy!

I will be riding the 100 too. I will be averaging around 14-15 mph. I will be wearing a team Lovestrong jersey and riding a specialized roubaix.
