Aside from the charity ride: how much riding do you plan to do? How far is the ride? How fast do you want to go? how comfortable do you want to be?
At the very least, I'd get a nice hybrid or good entry level road bike. These cost between $400 and $800. Check out the web sites for Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, Jamis and Fuji (Im sure I missed a brand or 2) Shop a few bike dealers, see whats out there, and try to figure out who maybe knowlegeable.
    Good Luck

Not that'd I'd ever suggest that someone not ride, but do you intend to stick with riding after this one event? If you haven't been on a bike in 30 years and don't envision sticking with it, perhaps the money that would be spent on a bike would be put to better use if donated to the charity. And maybe borrow a bike if you'd still like to ride the one event.

But if you are looking to get back into cycling, I agree with the previous post...a good hybrid or entry level road bike would be a good starting point.

Are you creating an event or riding in one?

I don't mean to rain on your parade cbr-6001974, but actually I'm trying to build one of those right now.. I need to plan my route, but it'll be in North Carolina over the first part of winter break.

I'm currently a co-chair for THON of Penn State DuBois. THON is the largest student-run philanthropic organization in the world. The Penn State Network has given over $7 million to children at the Hersey Medical Center in Hersey, PA..

I chose North Carolina because of the family I have there. the cold will be ok, by that time I'll be so frigid from being up north that it won't matter. For the distance, i don't know.. I'd like to ride from Fayetteville, Charlotte, Raleigh, the north Atlantic area of the state, down to Myrtle beach, and back to Fayetteville.

To check out THON, go to...
    www.thon.org

Or go to the PSU DuBois facebook site at... (you can ask on how to give donations)
    http://www.facebook.com/groups.php?r...d=130404574430

Even though I felt like i rained on your parade, sorry. But perhaps this will give you some encouragement, or even a partnership, I'd be all ears for it!
