I too will be riding in Philly. This will be my 4th year doing this event and I absolutely love it. Last year I rode the 100, this year I may do the 20 with my 8 year old daughter. If she backs out I will be on the 100.

We definitely need to make sure we get a little meet and greet together this year before the ride.

Stay in touch.

I am doing Philly and will qualify for Austin again.

hey all,

I'll be riding Philly this year...going to be driving down from MA...don't know the area at all, so would love to meet up with some of you!

I too have a score to settle with the hills in Philly!!! They punished me along with the humidity last year!!

reddDesign (or to anyone else from out of town who is coming to the Philly LiveStrong Challenge) - I live in Montgomery County, not too far from the start of the event. If you want some ideas for places to stay, things to do, or local rides prior to the event, feel free to let me know.

HigherGround 01-04-10 11:19 PM

barryflht and oldfujiman - I feel your pain about the hills! I suffered through the 100 mile course in 2008, even though I was sick. Last year I opted for the 70 mile route due to an over-use injury in the late spring / early summer. This year I'm planning to do the 100 mile ride again, and I'd like to actually enjoy it (relatively speaking) this time!

thanks! I'm sure I'll hit up your advice closer to the ride, when I start prepping.

I started my base prep 11/30 and took a little break over the last week and 1/2... I start back to training full blast next Monday...Hopefully, I'll stay healthy and not have to travel too much for work this year and can enjoy the 100 in August..... Looking forward to it and plan on being in tip top shape by then.... I need to drop about 15 lbs ..... we shall see.

Does anyone have a map of the 2009 Philly rides? I assume they'll be similar this year, but mainly I'd like to get an idea of how challenging the courses are. Trying to decide if I should register for the Philly ride this year. It would be my first.

Doing the Philly ride this year and hopefully will be able to do the 100 mile ride. This year hasnt started out well, I was going to be riding for a friend of the family and since the start of they year has grown to 4 :(
Will I be able to do the Philly-100m on a fixed gear? Itll be with 48/15 gearing if that helps (or should I ride the geared bike?)

HigherGround 01-10-10 12:55 AM

VA-Esquire, sorry to hear about the growing count. I wish them the best with their personal challenges.

As far as the Philly 70 and 100 mile rides are concerned, they both have a lot of climbs; some of them are pretty steep. When I did the 100 mile ride in 2008, there were a significant number of people toward the end of the ride who were either walking the hills or stopped on the side of the road. Some people said they wished they had either a compact or a triple. In addition, that time of the year can be pretty hot and humid. I'd definitely recommend the geared bike!

I'll be doing the 45 this year plus volunteering. I did the 20 and rode another 25 as a wingman and want more of a challenge this year. I'm on the planning committee for Philly and probably have the link to all the maps somewhere in my email archive. What I can say is that the runners and bikers will be on separate days this year to alleviate the parking issues that came up this past year. If anyone wants any recommended ride routes or places to stay, I live about 25 minutes from the starting line.

I'm relatively new to cycling and haven't done a charity event before. I'd like to do the Livestrong Challenge in Austin, although I understand I need to fundraise $250. I would very much like to raise this money and participate in the ride, but as a broke college student, does anyone have tips on how I could accomplish this?

Hit up parents, professors, friends, parents of friends, etc. I'm sure your college friends could help for $10 or $20 for a cause....

definitely some surprising hills on the 45 mile route last year...doing 100 miles this year, according to the map, it appears that they get a little worse further out. it will be my first century, 2nd livestrong event...can't wait!
