Need info on Vintage Bianchi Axis

I purchased this bike new back in the late 80's or early 90's. Can anyone identify the year and the approx value? It needs a new seat and the tires are original and need to be replaced also. It is 21 speed. Here are a few words from the bike frame and components: Chrome Moly Special, Sakae Sx, Suntour XCD, Diacompe......I'm sorry to say it probably hasn't been ridden since the 90's. I ride motorcycles more than bikes. I'm just trying to decide whether to fix her up or to just sell her. BTW this is my first post so if my pictures don't make it I'll try again.

Hi MaryBiker welcome to the forums. Nice Bianchi. That is a '89 Axis a model that seems to come and go but is always a nice machine. Since yours needs a few things you may have trouble getting top dollar, which depending on where you live may only be $200 anyway, but I don't see why it shouldn't bring $175 to 200 as is.

In a lot of places "Gravel Grinding" (bike riding or racing on dirt roads) is becoming a big sport and this bike is perfect for that. CL locally for $200 may bring quick easy sale if you don't mind trying to help a buyer with shipping you may get more.

PS I think this may be a tad small for you, that seat is way too high.

Ha ha, the stem got pulled up when I removed the seat. Thanks so much for the information. I'm kind of tempted to keep it and get my butt back in the saddle. But right now we have 3 motorcycles and 5 bicycles crowding our garage. I should probably let go.

I like that bike a lot. I bet it's worth $200 all day long in St. Louis. Someone will recognize that bike for what it is and buy it.

I also have an Axis from 1989. Purchased mine here in New Zealand 3 years ago for ~$300.
Aside from some nice cyclocross tires (the canti brakes allow for good width) and brake pads/cables, mine is original down to the factory celeste bar tape and celeste seat. These are heavy chromoly bikes. I use mine for daily commuting on road and gravel. Celeste steel has value in the market for Bianchi nuts (like me!)

My understanding is the weight was a huge issue with these not being interesting to the growing Cyclocross crowd in the late '80s. My Equinox with a Prestige frame still tipped the scales at 23.5lbs! A bit porky for something you have to lug up hills and over obstacles.

Hey OP, I live in St. Louis and would be interested in this bike if you decide you aren't going to work on her yourself. Did you ever end up deciding what you were going to do?

Good Morning. Someone is interested in your Axis and trying to get your attention but neither of you can PM.

I didn't realize there were so many posts here! I'm sorry if I've ignored anyone. Bianchigirl, I have contacted David in STL to see if he's still interested. Thank you for passing on the info to me.

My Bianchi Axis has found a new home!

I'm new to Bike Forums but I have to say how great it is. Thank you for all the information. I was reluctant to part with my bike, but through this forum I connected with someone literally a couple miles down the road from me who loves Bianchi also and has provided a new home/life for the Axis. No worries, I still have two bikes to enjoy.

Your welcome, we love to help. Glad things worked out for you and I am sure @PaintItCeleste will let you come visit your or rather his Axis.

Don't be a stranger.

Mary,

Thank you so much. It was a pleasure to meet you and I will be sure to take good care of your bicycle! And yes, you may come ride it whenever you'd like. I got it home and was worried about explaining the purchase to the wife but instead I think the sparkle of the paint woo'ed her and now I need only worry if I will ever get to ride it (she's claiming it!). Bianchigirll, thank you again for helping connect us on this. With a few tune up, the bike will be ready to rock and will have a place in the stable with her now several other siblings

Your welcome glad to help and happy to see that great looking Axis go to a good home. Is that a Squadra on the end? I would love of those turquoise Bianchis

It's a 1987 Trofeo. I recall asking here and you actually had the answer for me! It has the commemorative sticker on it "1986-87 Campione del Mundo | Colorado Springs".

Beautiful! I like your way with words "Bianchi quiver" and "celeste herd", haha. Very nice bicycles you have there. My TSX is 8-speed Chorus. Perhaps one day....Record....one day.
