Well Miyata owner refuses to respond (I actually tried getting in touch earlier this week but couldn't. I thought maybe it sold but the ad was updated today).
I think I'll take a look at the ArrowPace. Sounds decent enough and maybe getting it for $230 or $240 wouldn't be too bad.

Still learning
Re 250 price, it is CL and op said 300 was top. Cash in hand buyer in first few days are the most real. Never had the pleasure of a 912 but have had a 712 or whatever that 700 line was.
Re overall bike market in general lately I have sold 3, bought 1 (three were 1980s vintage) in last month and overall impression is soft for vintage steel, buyers are looking for (and getting) deals on wide range of bikes. Deals were transacted via ebay, swap, and CL. Sold 1990 trek 420, sold 1984 club fuji, bought 1989 fuso and they were all buyer side deals, that is totally overhauled, nicely presented and still buyer's market on value. jmo

ok, got a hold of the Miyata owner. I guess he had another buyer but they flaked. Anything I should look for specifically?
I'm meeting him in an hour so no one will probably respond in time lol. I'll google some advice for buying second hand bikes too.

just took my '80 univega gran rally on its maiden voyage. man, what a great road bike. i've owned two now (the other was an '81 g.rally), and it's definitely the best japanese bike i've ever ridden (and i've owned six).
that said, i prefer motobecane. ha!
i'm glad a previous owner made the 700c conversion with this one. i prefer 23c tires over 1".

Hey guys, thanks again to everyone for their help. I ended up biting on the Miyata 912. Got it for $280.
The Univega will have to wait for another time!
