Vitus 979 with Mavic Mektronic shifting
I have had several folks ask me what this is worth including my wife. The bike is not that old and the frame is not that rare, but the combination is nice and it is unique. However, I know that does not equate to value. So, does anyone have an idea?
Here is a link for a thread on this bike:

Thanks.

Bikes: No-name LH drive track. Also ride an Exxon Graftek, a Masi, a Trek R200 or a RR Boneshaker for fun!

Value is an interesting debate on items such as this. Sold values on the Bay are, as you expected, quite low for what this bike represents. $300 for the shift system and $50 - $200 for the frameset.
I think it can and should be argued that an item like this is like a fine wine, that it has to be properly preserved until the time that the rest of the cycling community figures out its rarity.
A lot of people dissed the Campagnolo Delta brake when it came out. Try buying a set now. Likewise with some other examples.
Very neat bike, well worth displaying in the front room IMHO.

You do not see many built up riding examples of the Mektronic system. Most folks have not clue what it is or how it works. The system works very well with a couple of exceptions; don't get it wet and plan ahead when climbing. Water and low RPM will get you in trouble. I have seen a couple of recent articles on the Mektronic system as companion pieces to articles on the new SRAM wireless system.

Use part out value. Check completed auctions on eBay. My estimate: Complete verified working Mektronic group $300-400. Vitus 979 frameset with the unusual straight fork (is that original?) $200-300. Wheels I'm unsure. The rest $200 (Berthoud saddle, etc). Total I'd say around $1000.

I don't think its total value equals the part value as described above. Because it's odd...and I don't think people are clamoring for it...I'd guess in the 400-500 range on ebay. But that's a guess. I haven't seen enough of them sell to give a firm answer. If it went up with a no reserve auction I think it could sell for $200 or $800 - depending on who saw it.
On craigslist I'd imagine this is very hard to sell all together ubless you're in the right metro area.

Well, it could be parted out, plenty of bikes are worth more in pieces than whole.
