Cramerotti + veloce 9 speed
Hello!
First time poster, but have often frequented this forum. I'm looking to get some help identifying and valuing this red cramerotti. There are no decals on the frame other than the brand. Full campy veloce 9 speed groupset. I think the frame is aluminum, with a steel fork (based on my tests with a magnet). Wheels are ambrosio evolution. The handlebars are deda (not sure which model). Eclypse stem.
Does anyone know anything about this bike? What model is this? How much do you think this bike is worth? As for the groupset, what does the Veloce compare to in the Shimano line up?
I'm located in Vancouver.
Thank you for your help!

Hello, aha29 Welcome to the forums. Nice looking bike. I don't know much about the brand but the one I did see in person, an early '90s 'cross bike, was very nicely built.
Veloce would be roughly equivalent to 105 I think. an you get some better pics from the seller?

Yeah, a pal of mine was looking for a road bike yesterday and we saw this posting on Vancouver Craigslist. The listing is a disaster - guaranteed not to sell. It starts with the obligatory useless non-drive side photo, and then includes some hilariously incorrect sizing. Pass - too bad, it could be a decent bike.
BTW: I own two Cramerottis.

What's the asking price or is it an auction?

I think $600 is a little high for that. 9spd would be (if original) would be late '90s very early 2000s right? I think $500 might be max but if that chain is really stretched you want to try for a hefty discount on that because the cassette may be worn.

Worn out chain? You think? Out of hundreds of used bike appraisals I've done, only one did not need a new chain. More than half needed a new cassette/freewheel. Which is why the bikes are for sale in the first place.
Anyway, there is one odd thing with the drivetrain that sticks out, so I would be cautious.
And the Craigslist posting is so weird... What does it tell you about a potentially decent road bike where the seller has no credible information?

Thanks for the replies. What do you mean the odd thing about the drive train?
Whats the best way to find out if it needs a new cassette?

Unfortunately the only way to discover it needs a new cassette is after installing a new chain. If the chain skips over the teeth when pedaling hard it is worn and needs replaced. I did rebuild of a warrantied frame one time and after installing a new chain and freewheel discovered the chainrings were worn too. The customer in question simply never bothered to care for his bike.

I see. Turns out she was selling it for her 80yo dad, who can't ride anymore. He got it built by Cramerotti about 15 yrs ago for $3500 at the time.

So what do we think overall? What would this bike be worth on the Vancouver market? Is it anything special? Or the usual--if it fits and you like it, buy it?

Perhaps the seller simply knows nothing about the bike or how to best sell bikes. It could be his Dad's or even Mothers old bike, maybe a roomie left it behind. A bad ad doesn't turn me off as quick as someone who tries to list every detail and fact about the bikes, especially when the embellish that a bike was made in Italy when in fact it was made in Japan. Sometimes little or inaccurate info can be good for the buyer.
As for the pricing on this bike, I concur that the 600 seems a bit high...but, not exorbitantly so...500 ish seems more reasonable...

Awesome. I ended up grabbing it for $400, lady threw in some jerseys and gloves also. She was really nice. Took it to my LBS to get the rear wheel trued, everything else looks great they said, incl the drive train. It weighed in at 22lbs with pedals. Frame and such looks pretty much brand new, her dad was meticulous with the upkeep. I'm pretty happy with it! Could do a lot worse for $400 trying to buy a bike in Vancouver.

Hope you checked for cracks. That is why I will not buy a used aluminum bike anymore. got one last year that had hair line cracks that I failed to see. Aluminum used bikes can mean big trouble. That is why I stick with steel.
