A Puch Austro-Daimler Pathfinder A-D

Hey guys. I like this frame and have seen a good number of people pretty happy with their Pathfinders in this forum. I asked the seller if they would take a lower price considering the laundry list of things wrong with the bike and was told to make an offer. I'm trying not to be mean and low ball too much but I feel the price has to come down significantly. Am I wrong?

Circa 1980 vintage Austro-Daimler Pathfinder 12Spd Roadbike

Fairly low end bike missing a parts. Would cost more to properly fix up get running again than it is really worth say $100 maybe more if you did all the work yourself and $200 if you had a shop do it. Basically it's a $150 bike complete in nice riding condition, that basically needs that much or more in work. I would say pass you would need to get the bike for close to free for it to make sense even then I would say if your looking for vintage bike to fix up you should be looking for something a lot nicer.

I feel like you're probably right. However, I'm having a hell of a time finding vintage bikes to fix up in these parts but have been enjoying it when I do. I may offer a very low price to see what happens. If they turn me down, no big deal. If they take it, cool.

Thanks for the input guys! I'm getting more comfortable with this whole thing.

I wonder what the difference between an AD Pathfinder and a Puch Pathfinder II is.
I refurbished a Pathfinder II last summer completely- new decals and all. Totally not worth it given the frame and component quality, but it was a nice ride even with it being lower end, so I decided to go for it.

If tearing down, cleaning, and rebuilding a bike is fun for you- have at it. The price is high, for what you are getting, at least in my eyes.

ive read that the AD brand was reserved for higher end bikes in the US, but that Puch was supposed to be seen as a separate brand and often times the company competed against itself since Puch had higher end bikes too. AD Puch is quite the read for those who want to learn what not to do in business. Supply delays, competing lines, mislabeled and mis-spec'd bikes, etc.

From what I can understand, the Puch-made A-Ds are the lower end. I have a Puch Odyssey, which is also supposed to be lower end, but I do enjoy riding it even though it's pretty heavy. Maybe I'm wrong about the relationships. I think this bike would be fun clean up and tinker with, but I'm not exactly loaded enough to get into the habit of putting more money into a bike than it's worth.

Austro Daimler, main
My Austro-Daimler "Vent Noir II" Bicycle And Brief History of Steyr Daimler Puch

ADs being marketed as the higher end is just some info I read. But like Abe Lincoln once said, 'The problem with quotes on the internet is its difficult to verify their authenticity'. So knowing that, the site may be wrong- who knows.

The first link is short, the second is manifesto style long, but really detailed and a good read. The bike history starts about halfway down the page of the second link.
