a paletti and a rossin walked into a bar...
hey folks!
So I'm a very short woman (5'2-5'3) on the hunt for a new road bike! My craigslist hunt over the past few weeks has brought me to two beauties but I have no idea how much either of them is actually worth/what they are. It's tough to find used bikes in my size, so I don't really want to pass up a good deal...because one might not come along for a while.
The Rossin: (Think it's a record professional from my interwebs digging, but double check me) BIKE FOR SALE
Owner said he got some new components/a tune up in 96 and hasn't really ridden it much since.
The Paletti: (No idea what this is but I think it's preeeetty) Paletti Road Bike 48cm for sale
No info from the owner yet, but I sent him an email full of questions and will update when I hear back.
Basically, how much are they worth/are they worth my time and efforts? And how much fixing up would each one need so I can be sure to budget that in when I'm thinking about it.
Thanks y'all!

Who's doing the wrenching, you or a bike shop? Both bikes need work. Figure about $225 for new rims, with tape, tubes, and tires, not including labor.

I think the Rossin will end up the better deal. The other had no wheels and the seller says saw prices up $2000 and wants an offer.....he is fishing for big bucks. As far as the Rossin tuned 20 years ago is a meaningless joke. You will need to overhaul the bike.

Probably a combination of the two. My partner worked as a bike mechanic for a few years, so I'll probably recruit him for most/all of the labor. He has no idea how much these two are worth though which is why I decided to post about it here.

Paletti > Rossin
Dollar for dollar as they sit you'll probably have more money into the Paletti.
I's pay $250-ish for the Paletti

I saw two Rossin vintage bikes sell on ebay for $549 and $600. Don't know much about the brand, but maybe come in around $350 for it? Or more depending on condition. The Paletti sold for $650 and $718 so seem a bit more expensive. Also need to subtract for not having the wheels. Bring your mechanc partner since he might know some other things to look for. One problem I had in the past buying a steel LeMond frame was rust in the bottom bracket area. So look for that, dented tubes, ripple in downtube behind the fork, cracks, take for test ride, etc. Most importantly, make sure you're comfy with the top tube length.

I think the Rossin will be a better deal. The bike will need a total overhaul and cleaning as it appears to have been gathering dust for quite a while. If you are capable, or have a friend who can, to do the work it will be fairly cheap to do. If not, figure $200-$300 for a bike shop to do a complete overhaul and tuning.

Moneywise: of course the Rossin. Nice frame , briefters, OK Campy nineties equipment and probably a decent wheelset. But.... That Paletti is very very nice ! 5 years from now those extra bucks will not seem like a big deal and that bike will still be special and a great ride.

I agree, I think the Rossin is the way to go. I woukld try and go test ride with no more the $350 in hand. If it fits and you like you it offer $350. Use the aforementioned need for an overhaul as a bargaining chip. "Sure it is a great bike but it has been sitting for 20 years and the grease in the wheels. cranks and headset needs cleaned out and replace"
If the say no leave you info and tell them to call if they change their minds.
This guy is day dreaming. Palettis are nice bikes but without wheels, 6spd ones at that, this bike is barely worth $250ish with that '86 vintage shimano.

Thanks for your input, everyone! I ended up going with the Paletti. Paid 350 for it, so not the best deal, but it's really beautiful and suits me, so I'm alright with it. Definitely got my work cut out for me though!

Late to thread...but...I think you did the right thing...while, yes, it will take more to get your Paletti back on the road...it just seems to resonate stronger than the Rossin! It is also, IMHO, more attractive!
Also...welcome to the Bike Forums...and...glad someone on here picked that one up!
