Help ID 82 or 83 Trek?
Trying to discover the year this was made, color trek called it and model number. I don't have a photo but while searching through google and concluding it's either a 82 or 83, possibly in the 760-70 line? I found another user's here, photograph, other than no brake hoods, different saddle and no bag, it's identical, to this:

That head tube being the same color as the frame; i.e. - not having a color wrap the same as the seat tube, tells me it's an 82 600 series......probably.
What is the crank set? I have an 82 614 and it came with a Sugino AT.

Treks are easy to track down as the catalogs are online. Double butted Reynolds frame tubing means it is not a 700 series but a 600 series. Very nice bike in any case.

The serial number should tell you what you need to know. Check out the vintage Trek website to learn how to decipher it.

Yes, however I do not have the bike in my possession to get numbers. and already visited the vintage trek site before running across the above and asking for help. , trying to match the model, keying on the few things I do know, color, handlebar levers, Suntour Cyclone Derailleur and the same crank and sprocket as the above pictured bike.
It's identical but, there's only 2 in the trek catalogs during 83 > 720 and 82 >728 that have those shifters, none say they're in this color, nor do they seem to be the exact model, especially with hurlet derailleurs verse the Cyclone on what I'm trying to nail down . . . 'Reynolds 531 tubing, Suntour cyclone derailleurs, barcon shifters, Rigida rims , SR Handlebars, red-orange without secondary color on headpost '
was guessing 760-70 because I saw another similar whom somebody claimed was in that range in google photos.

1982 614 has cyclone derailers and came in that color. Adding Barcons was a popular modification back then, so that's probably what you've got n

OK cool thanks, then, that's gotta be it, the red/pewter panel is throwing me off though, albeit, this bike does not look like it's got a pewter secondary color as the cat says . Unless, I just realize, maybe the label is pewter background? ;

I'm not great with valuations, and they can vary based on where you are located. 100% rideable, good paint, consumables all in good shape, it would be worth ~$250-$300 where I live. Sometimes it seems like I over-value bikes, though, based on the way I see others evaluating them here.

Yeah, that's about what I was concluding also, after hunting through ebay, and other online sites,, if "excellent" as the seller claims and fully operable with new Continental tires then his ask of $150 is pretty decent. Thanks.
I usually hold older cruisers but 3 weeks ago I ran across an 85 460 for $30 that just needed a flat fixed and a rim trued (spokes tightened properly ) and, once I hopped on and took a spin, got a little love struck.

True, and "excellent" in descriptions: "possessing outstanding quality or superior merit; remarkably good" is a lose word. "excellent" for an 33 year old bike, could very well consider usage compared to junk, whereas, depending on what a seller is guiding from, in a scale of 1 too 10, remarkably good is just above a 5 and less than an 7. In a used bike or collectible item that's a huge margin.

Its a 1982 613 or 614, and the color is 'red with pewter panel.' They run at about $50-$300 depending on the condition of the paint and components. $50 is rust everywhere and/or a dead drivetrain. $100 is pretty rust on the dropouts and bad tires, brake pads, and bar tape. $200 is all in good condition, all stock. You get more towards the $300 mark the more accessories and upgrades you put into it.

Asking price for my 614 was $200 on CL and I got it for $150. It was/is an 8 on 1-10 scale.
Does the bike in question have a pewter head tube color or a red head tube; I'm a bit confused on that?

BUYER BEWARE OF PROSPECTIVE FORK ISSUES. This would be a deal killer for me.

In my experience,
"mostly original condition" = hasn't had a dime invested in it since it left the showroom and needs $75-$100 in consumables, including tires, a full cleaning and overhaul.
"excellent condition" = The seller may be inexperienced as a collector/seller or maybe a casual rider. I can't begin to count the number of times where a bike with a damaged and bent front fork is dewcribed as "excellent condition."
I prefer to let the photos speak for themselves.

Once again, the bike in question, other than different seat, bag and brake hood, is identical even in condition to the one used in 1st post. Albeit, I'm also confused about the catalog's "red/pewter panel" unless it is referring to the background color on the seat post decal. Of which, the blue in the cat. does not have a different colored head post too so, it seems, most 82's did have two toned frames and few did not. .

Dang! I noticed that trek did a product recall on a MTB or hybrid a while back, while I was browsing around a few days ago, a welding frame issue on a girls bike. And one of the options was a $100 certificate toward a new bike, that's a raw deal there. I completely expected them to offer a whole new bike and the concept of $100 discount is petty. It also surprises me because, the trek store local to me have been the most supportive bike store I've ever run across. There's several different bike stores in my area, all are reasonable but, the Trek has always gone the extra distance, from showroom, Tech guidance, Bike shipping boxes with packing materials, even recently, offering paint touch-up at no charge, and yet, I've never bought anything from them. I have since considered, it's all part of Trek's business policies, but that $100 cert leaves me to question.
Of course on a 30 year, plus bike, I wouldn't expect much from Trek, yet I'd be attempting to communicate with the corporation if a fork fractured like that. If not for anything else except knowledge base whereby, Trek ought to be putting a warning out too.

If you're still trying to ID the bike, it's helpful to look at the fork steerer. Sometimes they would dremel the model number on there.

Add me to the list because, the only thing that was presenting me a difficulty of having photos and possessing the bike of my inquiry is a 300 mile round trip. I have the time and with a Prius it's no more than 10 bucks in gas. And since I have not yet been in the area it's at, a good discovery availed with a reason.
Now, that fork issue, Geez!, that ain't good and could be cause to make the seller reduce too $100.
In the mean time, you can rest assured that I've since cleaned the fork on my 85 460; checked for any cause for concern.. Perhaps it's limited to the Japan made 'Ishiwata' forks, but I ain't taking no chances, going superman?, (loss or lock of the front wheel at high speed), been there, done that and have the scares to prove it. . no thanks
This thread has been very helpful, thanks to all of the contributors, I was able to narrow down exactly what I asked for, and especially learned for going above the query. Thanks folks!
