1987 Schwinn Super Sport - Appraisal
Hello all,
I have a nearly pristine condition 1987 Schwinn Super Sport that I picked up awhile ago. I may be interested in selling it but I would like to get an idea what it's worth before placing it on the market (this is not a for sale thread).
1987 Schwinn Super Sport
Year: 1987
Make: Schwinn
Model: Super Sport
Size: 53-54CM
Material: Columbus Tenax Steel
Color: Red to White Fade
Wheels: Rigida 700C Rims (front & rear - do not think the front is original, but it is a Rigida)
Hubs: Maillard Hubs (sealed mechanism)
Tires: Bontrager R3 (newly installed with brand new tubes)
Stem & Handlebar: Cinelli
Saddle: San Marco
Pedals: Shimano 600
Groupset: Shimano 600 (modern Ultegra)
Condition: 8.7/10. There is absolutely no rust on the frame, groupset, or components. The fork dropout has small scratches from storage (easily can be touched up). On the left seat stay, there is a a paint rub that is about 1/2 an inch. It is not deep and has not reached the frame material. This bike can still be deemed as "like new" condition bike and it definitely shows that it has not been ridden much. The only service that needs to be done is tensioning the wheels.
Originality: This bike is 98% original except for the tires and front wheel. No cables, components, spokes, groupset, handlebar tape has been replaced.

2- post with a handful of pictures. full pic from the drive side, detailed pics of components, detailed pics of frame.
3- Total guess since there are no pics, but I would say $250-325, since its 600EX components and not tricolor, and its unknown what the real condition is of everything(pictures are better than claim that its pristine). You mention almost everything is original and that really isnt appealing for many buyers. If you sell it to a knowledgeable cyclist, they will probably be able to change the tape, cables, and housing. But most will not do that and would have to spend $100 for work and parts for the shop to do it. That puts the bike into the $350-425 sphere for total ready to ride cost.
The hubs arent original, they too would be 600. But if they spin well, then it probably isnt an issue since they match and work well. This isnt a collector, its just a really nice rider.

Yup, thats nice.
I would say $300 as is. If you leveled the drops a bit and replaced the cables and housing, $325.
Really nice bike- the entire drivetrain looks to be in excellent condition.

I picked up the bike from a local Schwinn shop that closed down 15+ years ago. It seemed to be a new bike that was only demoed and the drivetrain is in excellent condition. My guess would be that it has less than 50 miles on it. The few blemishes on the bike is from storage

Those pedals need the original cages, which are unobtainium. They don't work without them. Otherwise, I would have rated the bike more like a 9.75/10
Overall mileage is not so important. As you have found out, how the bike has been stored during the interim can have more impact on condition. I have found bikes that had 20 miles or less on them in dreadful condition due to poor storage.
And of course, with those low miles, anything with bearings and grease will need maintenance. Grease does not last 18 years.

I would say $350 or so ounce you lower the stem a bit, level the bars and put the pedal cages back on. These seem like little things but they can make a big difference in how easily the bike sells and price in most markets a couple of minor things can easily hurt selling price by $50-100 on a mid level bike like this one.

I thought it looked familiar, maybe a pic was preciously posted on the thread about the dealership that was closing.
If I recall correctly, this paint scheme was released when there was resistance to the magenta and white. So, a late-ish '87.
Maillard hubs certainly not original, same with front skewer. Not sure about the saddle. Those components are really nice, however.
Agreed with estimates above, depending on how bike friendly your particular market is.

Nice bike. OP's is in much better shape than mine. Mine is mostly original but ridden a lot and needs a full overhaul. I was happy to get mine for $100. I'd say $300 is fair for the OP's.

I was wondering about that. The catalog specifies magenta and white which is what my bike is. And it's exactly the same as the OP's (except the color of course) and even missing the original front wheel! Saddle is listed as San Marco and that saddle looks the same as mine so I'm guessing they're both original.
