Late 60S-Early 70S Schwinn Varsity
found this at a local co-op for $40, wondering if it's worth it. frame appears to be in good shape, the wheels need truing but don't look bad. needs bartape, tubes/tires and brake pads (and a regrease. probably hasn't been touched in years) but mechanically it feels great. size is even pretty close to perfect for me so I'm interested in picking her up.
Edit: appears to be a 73, orange in color and the fenders are still intact, if a little dinged up

$40 is probably about right. Just bear in mind that with their straight gauge electro-forged carbon steel frames, steel rims, and lower end components, these bikes are very heavy by today's standards.
The one thing they have going for them is that they'll survive Armageddon (along with cock roaches).

incazzare.
They are heavy and clunky, and sometimes their construction is iffy, but people have a lot of nostalgia for them. Personally I wouldn't spend time and money fixing one up, but if you like it and can do it cheaply, I don't think $40 is unreasonable if the condition is ok.

But... the Schwinn Varsity is still a very ride-able and important piece of bicycling history.

I pulled the trigger on it. I like the machine, and yes, she's heavy as all hell, but I'm looking forward to getting her back to working shape and on the road. (and the frame seems to fit me well! 5'9")

It looks like a 22" frame in Sunset Orange, pretty much all original with the factory fenders too. Well worth the $40, that's less than a dollar a pound. Here's the catalog page:
