1989 Team Miyata frame worth it?

https://images.craigslist.org/00k0k_...3_1200x900.jpg

I'm 100% not an expert but the guy wants $120 for the frame. From doing a little bit of research this seems like a steal. I want to start building up my own bike with the help of my friend who is a mechanic.

Just looking for some input on whether or not I could ever find a better frame if I kept looking because I won't be able to sink anymore money into it until the end of the year.

Thanks!

No you will not find a better frame; yes this is a very good deal. Buy it. I have a 1991 team miyata. I wouldn't sell it for $120. This is a terrific frame.

Assuming it's not crashed, yes that is a great deal. It would build up into a fine bike with modern components.

I called him and $180 is the price. Still a good frame for that price though I'm guessing.

Yes, still good. I bought an '86 Pro Miyata frame (one level below the Team) for $190 a few months ago (although mine came with a headset already installed). After building and riding it for a couple months now, I gladly would have paid a little more than that for the frame. It is the smoothest race frame I own. If you can fit 28s, do so and enjoy.

I had misheard him about the price when I called about the frame the first time. But thank you all for confirming that its a great deal! I'm meeting him tomorrow and will most likely pick it up!

In case you're wondering it is the correct size for me i believe. He said its a 54cm and I'm between 5'8 and 5'9 and have a 30in inseam.

Sounds like the right size to me.

As with all CL pickups, make sure to inspect the frame for dents and cracks, especially near the lugs/joints.

I bought this frame earlier today because it matches my 89 Ridge Runner Team. What would you recommend if I decide to go with modern components? I was thinking of building it up with period correct dura ace.

I love my 1991 Team Miyata, I would have paid $180 any day for the frame after owning it for 3/4 of a year. I love the ride so much I am getting rid of my newer bikes and sticking with it as my daily rider. None of my other bikes that are only a couple years old can come anywhere near the ride quality and dependability of my Team Miyata.

Great suggestions, @oddjob2. I'll have to think about this one. 105 is in the ballpark or maybe a little less than what I think I could source the original parts for. Not as cool as dura ace 7400 IMO, but probably quite a bit more functional.

@xiaoman1, I bought the frame, and I'm not the OP. I'll post a few pictures this weekend if you're interested. The frame is in ok shape, not great, lots of paint chips, a little surface rust, pitted chrome, etc.

There is a single threaded boss on the bottom of the top tube near the head tube and another one on the bottom of the down tube near the middle. Does anyone know what those are for?

The boss on the top tube is for a racing number, I am still trying to find a number holder for my frame. As for the one on the down tube, I am interested in what it is for as well since I have one too.

It's for holding CO2 cartridges. Found the answer on another BF thread.

Does anyone know where I can find a number holder, or a CO2 cartridge holder? I would love to put these on my Miyata.

Won't know for quite a while. I'm still assembling parts and probably won't ride it until next spring.

I bought a '81 team a few weeks ago and can't get over how fun it is to ride. It is easily my favorite now.

Sorry to revive this old thread but I'm researching these. The catalog says the cable goes through the top tube on the 1989 frames. But on the pictures like the OP's the cable is clearly on top and external. Was that a misprint in the catalog?

I think they had some problems with cracks forming around/originating from the internal routing holes. So....they went back to the external routing. I have a 1990 frame and it is external routing.

I have the frame in the picture above. It has cable guides on the top tube. I haven't heard of internal routing on any Miyata frames in the 80's. While I'm not necessarily an expert on the topic, I do have 3 high end 80's Miyatas all of which have cable guides.
