Peugeot Bike a Good Deal?
I've been checking out this ladies' Peugeot bike on Craigslist. I'd like to upgrade my ride for my daily commute and zipping around town. The seller thinks it's an 8-speed (needs to check when she gets home), not sure of the vintage.
Does anyone know anything about Peugeots? Is $180 a fair price? (I live in a VERY hot market.) I'm not looking for the highest-end bike, just a reliable, smooth ride. I'm riding a 1989 Schwinn World Sport now, so a bit of an upgrade would be nice.

In a hot market….. anything goes.
For some reason, little Peugeots are especially popular.
I think my wife has three or four of them.
The fact that the bike either fits you or does't should be a big consideration.

Definitely. I'm on the shorter side (<5' 2"). It's tough to find a bike that fits well, so size is a big factor for me. I'm going for a test ride this afternoon...we shall see.
I walked away from a vintage Bianchi that fit me beautifully last week, and I'm still kicking myself!

The price seems about right considering it is mixte with good cosmetics. This one is a pretty basic low end model so it wouldn't be much of an improvement if any over a late 80's World Sport.

Still learning
In a hot market, listed for 2 weeks? Apparently, not so hot at $180.
I buy a lot of Peugeot Mixtes in some very hot markets. As it is presented, more like $135 +/-, which mainly accounts for the need of tire replacement.

Good point! The seller seems motivated, so she may be open to negotiation.

@laurah
Side note, anecdotal: When they moved to the sunburst (orange/yellow or blue/purple) decal styling, they might have missed a fashion note on those maroon bikes. Any time I've had one of the early/mid-80s maroon bikes up for sale at the same time as other period colors like blue, pearl or black, the maroon always sells last and for the least amount of money. Black and blue go second, and the pearl or grey bikes always seem to sell first. People just don't seem to like the maroon bikes as much, not sure what's up with that.
Other notes, possibly important:
Look closely to make sure the clamp-on kickstand hasn't crushed the chainstay tubes.
From the non-drive side (side without the crankset gears), it looks like the fork is slightly bent backwards. The top half of the fork should be in a straight line from the head tube.

Agreed, if it has sat for 12 days in Washington DC, then it is priced too high. It appears to be a circa P18C in in good overall condition but with some minor issues. I notice that the right pedal dust cap is missing and that the brake cable housings are too short. I'd be replacing the cables but that's almost SOP with most used bicycles. On the plus side, it appears to have aluminum rims. You can use the minor issues as a bargaining tool to justify a lower offer.

Thanks for the advice everyone! The bike rides smoothly and fits well. No problems with the fame, but breaks and derailleurs need some adjusting. I got the seller down to $140, and I'm very happy with my purchase!
