1950's Cimatti?

I already talked to the guy about 30 minutes after it was posted. It's a 58cm (too big for me). But D@mn! I like it a lot. Is it worth the asking price? More? Less? If I bought and rehabbed could I get my money's worth?

I've looked online and got some info. Not a ton, but some.

Didst Velovixen intend to include a linque in her post?

Methimketh she hath been perusing the classifieds this afternoon...

Perhaps she spaeketh o' this wee beastie -

https://portland.craigslist.org/searc...matti&sort=rel

Our old amico the Agrati "BRIANZA" lugset complete w/bulge-formed head and malaguti style seat lug.

Looks like someone got creative with the stern arrestor arrangement in order to accommodate the Pletscher.

Don't miss the chainwheels - molta bella.

LOVE the headplate; wish we could read it all. You'll have to make a good photo of it for us post purchase...

That looks a lot smaller than 58cm to me, more like 54cm.

This is easy. Buy it if it is your size. A bike like this will not show up again. I bought a 1960 olmo gran sport earlier this year (and paid more than $200) because I knew I would not see a bike like that again on CL. This bike--the cimatte--is smoking hot.

+1

My thought as well.

Suspect seller may be measuring to the top of the seat binder collar to achieve the 58cm figure.

My guess would be that it is closer to 56cm c-t-c.

Vv keep in mind also that these annuated Italians tend to have low shells. Often quite low. So their standover height is typically a bit less than one might expect for a given frame size.

Been four hours since she posted...and no response.

Let's hope it's because she is jetting o'er to Lago Oswego to collect it!

Will be able to get a specific date from the Tullio locknuts.

No I haven't done it yet. Got to email the seller again. I'll keep you posted.

So other than the fact that it's pretty - what "might" it be worth if I overhauled it? Not that I'd necessarily sell it but I want to know what I am getting myself into.

Hahaha! I love it! I've emailed the seller. I can only wait now.....

I keep asking about value because if I buy it and it's too big then what? If it's only a little big I can ride it occasionally but keep because it's unique. But if its way too big then ?...

You should be able to easily sell it for what you paid for it in the Pacific NW. I think that bike can easily sell for $200 where I live and it is not a hot bike market here in Iowa.

More every day and my guess is that you will keep it for a while, if for no other reason than it is pretty. I have a few bikes that fall into that category and I like that I have them, even though I don't ride them often.

To properly 'restore' it wil take time and $$. There are nice but not period-correct components on it right now-strip them off and EBay them. This frame deserves a full restoration, so take your time at it.

Thanks for that information. I don't know anything about this type of bike to recognize what would be "correct" and what's not. If I get it (still waiting) then I'll post it's own thread.

Would you care to comment on what's not "correct" on it? Thanks.

Though I might wrong, everything looks original with the exception of the transmission, fenders and, of course, rack. The transmission might cost a buck or two, depending on what was original issue. Other than that...

Clean it up, grease it up, tune it up, replace only what needs to be replaced to ensure safe to ride, and then enjoy the ride(not to mention the tubular experience). This sort of refurbishment is fun, quick and costs very little. If the bicycle proves worthy, then you can decide to restore and that will cost a lot. Personally, I would just refurb the bicycle, retaining its lovely patina and consider myself I got so lucky.

Bet the cranks are worth a few dollars, all by themselves. Also...

Look into the fitting of the rear brake. Fitted like that seems wrong to me and defies sound mechanical practice(my opinion).

Oh...if I get this bike I'm not going to "restore" it. I would do as @randyjawa said and make it ride worthy. I have no idea about tubular tires and don't even know if I'd recognize them. Basically I'll go over with cash in hand and if I can stand over it (I've got long lets for my height), then I'll get it (assuming no frame damage. I will keep you posted and begin another thread over in the usual C & V.

I have chatted the the owners wife and will see the bike tomorrow morning. I will provide updates. If I can stand over it and there's no frame damage, I'll likely get it.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Bar tape, seat, Dura-Ace shift levers, reflectors, rack, kickstand - not original. Fenders - might or might not be.
Not sure what the front changer is, the rear looks like early Campagnolo from here.

Rear brake mount style is unusual, but some frames (Harry Havnoonian and Hi-E Cosmopolitan) come that way for increased performance (their opinion).
This has to do (as I understand it) with flexy caliper arms combining with slightly tapered rim sidewalls to increase the amount of braking force available.

With all that said, still a h311 of a deal. If I was in Portland right now, my sweetie would be beating on me for buying it...

BTW, this bike deserves a decent restoration. Don't buy it if you're planning on putting a flat bar and a comfy saddle on it. I would suggest that, with proper period rims, hubs, derailleurs, etc, and restored, it might be worth $1500 to a collector. As it sits right now, I'd say that the frame alone is worth $400.
