    Cilo Value?

    Now, I'd like to preface this with the following; I'm not selling this, I just don't have alot of info on it, or really know what it's worth. I paid $200 for it (to be honest).

    I know it's about a 56cm..I know it has a Campagnolo headset, DuraAce shifters, Suntour Cyclone RD, Araya 700c wheels...you can tell the rest (Yes it needs a different seatpost/saddle).

    The frameset alone is well worth $200, in my opinion. Not exactly a well known marque, but held in high regard from what I've read. SLX was also top tier tubing in its day.

    I dig the brakeset and Sugino Aero Mighty cranks.

    Thanks! I wasn't too familiar with Cilo, there isn't much as far as SN's online at all. The brakes are Diacompe Aero Grand Compe I think? We bought it from the original owner. He built it for his wife in the early/mid 80s I think. Apparently she rode it around the block, didn't like the position of a road bike, so he hung it up in his garage for the next 20 years. It's unbelievably light for a steel bike.

    Cilos do pop up on eBay now and then. Swiss made, and Cilo went out of business mid 80s, I believe. They tend to be undervalued. I had a nice full 531 frameset awhile back, but sold it off because I was worried about rust issues.

    Swiss made, either of SLX tubing, like yours, or SL. Generally, with Dura Ace grouping on the top model, and Shimano 600 on the next one down. Often the fork is chrome, and if not, it's lugged. The frame is very nice, handles well. Italian frame but uses Shimano components in most cases.

    Decals, if intact, are indicator of care, since they fall off easily. The paint is "soft" due to probably a lower grade of primer or poor surface prep. Mid 80's, and easily worth the $200.

    I paid $300 for an all DA model, 6-sp indexed, and it rode very much like a Cinelli frame I had. I ended up with about $400 in it and didn't feel it was a bad deal at all, as it had DA hubs laced to nice Mavic rims, and again, was 100% DA. I'd pay it again, especially if it fit, which 56 does.

    Hah...I wonder if I can get new brakepads for that brakeset anywhere? The pads are oval.

    They look a lot like the integrated pad/holder like the Shimanos in black and the Suntours in dark grey. They may be one piece with the pad glued in like those.

    I had an Aelle tubed Cilo that had a very nice 600 gruppo, Mavic wheels, etc. Same color as yours.

    FWIW, I paid more and sold it for more than what you paid, and considered it a bargain. I rode it nearly every day this past Spring and Summer, and it rode as nicely as any other bike that I've had. Kind of wish that I still had it.

    I bought a Cilo last summer. Did it up and really pleased. Quality frame, light, balance and good looking for their age. Well worth the money. I would drop the pink though.

    I just picked up a Cilo. 105 group set, so not as nice as the one pictured above. I couldn't get anything on the company/bikes, except that they are a Swedish company and went bankrupt in 2002. (per Wiki).

    But I think they're good bikes. Looking forward to many miles.











    Sorry about the blurry pic (the last one). Any of you know what the best way to take care of the two big patches of rust/paint?

    Sorry about the blurry pic (the last one). Any of you know what the best way to take care of the two big patches of rust/paint?

    Yes, step one use rust converter to convert any remaining rust. You can buy all the rust converter you will ever need (one jar) for $6 at Walmart.

    Step two: Go to Hobby Lobby or similar, get a couple of small jars of model paint (enamel). Mix up a color match and carefully touch up the areas.

    Or put clear or colored nail polish over the rust converter.

    For those interested, Cilo is pronounced "see-lo," not "che-lo," according to what I was told in the mid-'80s by a salesman who worked for the U.S. distributor. Swiss, not Italian, in other words.

    I wondered about that. I met a group of "intellectuals," or so it seemed, and even though I built the Cilo and owned the Cinelli, they set me straight with "see-low" and "chin-elli." They were all on Rivendells, so I simply rode away. They drank wine and knew what they were drinking. I was just there for the buzz.
