OK. Let this be a lesson to you boys and girls, CHECK THOSE FRAMES!!!
I am in the middle of a mini-nightmare now because I got sucked into a bike scam. I bought an upper-shelf steel frame/fork from a somewhat shady character off CL. One of those "I'll meet you in the transit station parking lot" cloak and dagger scenarios. That's OK, I've been around the block a few times; well, one more time might have done me good. After cleaning this beauty up, and making big plans, and noting that the fork seemed a slightly different color than the frame, I happened to notice a very slight brown line across the downtube lug. My CSI report on this travesty is that the bike had suffered a major head-on which destroyed the original fork and my sense of decency in the World . Some SOB put another fork under her and sold it to the first swinging sap to come along. ME!
I'm in process of consulting the best minds in the country to determine if this bike can be saved on a Budweiser beer can budget. Barack ain't returning my calls. Most of the Forum's opinion has been that it is a prime candidate for Burning Man. I'm close enough that I just might do it.

Rule #1: Always check every lug carefully, around the entire perimeter, when examining a frame or complete machine.

I bought a complete GT road bike w/ STI's to flip from a local guy I've bought from before. It turns to have had a broken seat collar which happens to have been integrated into the frame. Oh well, you win some you lose some.
Looking over my spreadsheet it appears I'm up $22 after parting it out. Regardless of the number of items on your checklist its still possible to overlook things.

Been there, done that. Got burned on a Nishiki ( I just couldn't resist with that name on it.) The paint next to the lugs is rusted. I had a frame expert look at it. "Nice piece of junk you've got there" was his decree. It's not all bad though. It turns out the stem is a smaller version of one of those Technomic long stems and I need those due to a neck injury. So I'll just take off the derailers and alloy crank and chaulk it up to a bad deal. It probably won't be the last one I make.
