Sugino Mighty 54/43 165 t drilled rings- Is it worth $50??
What is this crankset worth? -I bought it about 1979, and I'm debating taking it off and selling it before selling the bike.I will be lucky to get $125 for the bike-Sekai butted Champion tubing-50 cm-nothing fancy component wise.
54/43 165 dimensions-factory "drilled" rings
If it is worth $50 I would take it off-worth $20 leave it.The BB I might pull also- it is whatever sugino BB was lightest in 1979. I would think twice about removing the BB-sometimes that goes wrong-tough to get off without dinging it up.
Thanks
Charlie

Assuing in ready to ride, good condition, that Sekai is worth more than that around here. If it has alloy rims, etc., in a small size, would bring $175 to $200. Small sizes bring a premium.

wrk101- here some folks are selling clunky high tensile steel Fixied Schwinns for $300, but a straight up 10 speed-Chrome Moly-not a "name" brand (Schwinn,Raleigh,Fuji etc) with alloy wheels might go for $150-$175 (maybe), but it would go for the same $$ with a clunky crankset or a better one like this one.
I'll probably put decent enough wheels-Diacompe 500 brakes Suntour VGT (luxe??) on it and ask maybe $160 expect to get maybe-$140. The paint is in crummy shape that doesn't help.
Thanks

At that price range, I would definitely pull the crankset and bb. They are too nice to let go on a $140 bike.

If your going to pull the crankset you may want to consider converting it to a single speed. Profit will be maximized and you'll have a derailleur set w/ levers and a crank leftover.

Just how cheaply can I do a single speed? I have several cranksets-biopace and others-but they are 3 rings. Is it acceptable to just remove 2 rings? Would it sell that way? I could also just put a casette with just one- sprocket-use spacers or just grind the extra sprockets off-would that work-I mean would anyone actually buy it looking a bit cheesy like that??
I've looked at specific single speed cranks-$50+ new-same high prices for single speed rear wheels??
Thanks

1. Remove outer chainring, move inner to outer position, secure with BMX bolts. $5.99.
2. Measure chainline of front chianring.
3. Remove freewheel, install BMX freewheel. $17
4. Cold set frame to 120mm.
5. Respace rear hub to 120 mm while achieving proper spacing to match front chainline measurement.
6. Re dish rear wheel.
Thats about it.

Miamijim,
Thanks for the info.I could do all that except-the wheel I would use has a cassette setup-obviously not what the frame originally used. I also already opened the rear spacing to 130mm(long story, but I fit a MTB 26" wheel to it a while back-had to modify the hub(135) also). The frame started life at about 126mm in 1979,I think.
What I might do is use the BMX bolts/nuts to single ring one of my spare MTB cranksets.
Put a 9 speed XTR cassette that has one bad-worn ring on it and see which sprocket works best-then if possible get it into the best position.Probably cut the other sprockets off-maybe leave one or two on either side- . I also slightly deepened-1-2mm- the dropouts-long story involving the 26" wheel- so there is some chance one chain length could actually fit two sprockets-just moving the wheel in the dropouts.Of course the chainlines would have to split the difference-if possible. I also have some Nashbar "convert to single speed sprockets and spacers"-might look better than the chewed up cassette.
The dropouts are forged-still plenty of metal on them, but I have a lot to disclose to a potential buyer.
This will take some thought- better get to work.
Thanks
Charlie
