Nishiki or Raleigh
Which bike is a better buy? I want SS so I would switch the Nishiki if I got it.

I know the Raleigh Capri is at the lower end of the Raleigh line. Not sure which Nishiki model that is. If it is lower end too, I guess they are kind of a push since you would have to convert the Nishiki. If the Nishiki is a better model (maybe has forged dropouts, etc.), it would be the way to go.

I think you have a more modern look with the Nishiki crank wise. The Raliegh has a lot of decals and looks more old school although I do like the colors. I'd also say it comes down to the bar type...which determines the look of the bike. What look are you going for? A more Hybrid look or a Road look?

The guy with the nishiki has the original drops basically the only difference is the fact that one is ss and the models. I'm leaning towards the nishiki although that raleigh badge looks pretty epic

If you plan on putting the original drop bars on the Nishiki, see if the owner has the original brake levers. Do you plan on re-dishing the rear wheel and getting a single speed cog ? That will cost you a $15. The Nishiki is still the better buy even with all that.

pardon the newb question but how can i tell if the hub on a bike with cassettes has an built in freewheel (in which case i would only need a cog) or if I need a single speed freewheel.

There are several ways, if it's a 6 speed rear, there is a 95%+ probability it is a freewheel. If it's a 7 speed rear, it's still probably a freewheel but to be certain you'd have to see it. When you look at the gears, the cassette has a lock ring that covers the outer right side of the cassette. A freewheel does not have the lock ring and appears to have a "dish" on the extreme right side of the gears.

+1 Very likely to be a freewheel, and not a cassette. If you can't tell, take it to any shop and they will tell you. Also you should read up on cassettes and freewheels on the Sheldon Brown site, he explains it well.
