Late 1970s AO8, you can find out more on Jim's website. Exact year does not really matter, as they made millions of them during that time. It certainly would not affect the value. $40 is about market value for one in that shape. Needs quite a bit of TLC, but nothing expensive as long as you do the work yourself. Cleaned up and ready to go, these bikes bring about $125 to $150 around here. Paint appears to be in good shape, which is always a plus.
Its a bottom end model, but people like the styling, lugs, and overall appearance. And they tended to be much lighter weight wise than their competition.
I have rehabbed several UO8s. Upgrading them can be costly due to the french threading (somewhat unique). The parts are out there, but they command a premium. Reusing what you have is the way to go (you already own those parts!). Of course, tires and cables are standard size. Be careful with those plastic Simplex derailleurs, they tend to crumble. You can find metal Simplex derailleurs that would make a nice upgrade, but they are kind of pricey. Pretty much any claw type rear derailleur will work, I put a nice Suntour unit ($10 on ebay) on my last one.
Type IV downtube decal puts the bike in the 1977 to 1978 period.
