Price check: Early , Second generation Campagnolo crankset

I just wanted to see if anyone has been following the market price of these cranks. The cranks I am reffering to is the one with the lip around the pedal hole, not the first gen with the caps on the backside.

The picture is of the same crankset I sold almost 2 years ago: the anodizing was removed and it had a crack. The one I am looking at looks original.

PS. If you can't see the difference between these and other Record cranks, I thank you very much for your time , but you might not have the answer I am looking for.

Record? These look like early 80s Grand Sport to me

The crank marketplace on ebay is nothing short of crazy these days. And condition is everything (so need pictures of the crank in question). That said a Grand Sport crank (like the one pictured) in fine working condition with 170mm arms should bring at least $50. Upper limit determined by how nice cosmetically it is and by who (and how many) might be looking for that crank in a particular week

Hello, ejuste , thanks for your time. That's kind of what I meant by my PS note, these are not your typical Record cranks, there are some obvious differences. These are definitely Record cranks from the late 50's early 60's and were often matched with Gran Sport derailleurs. I sold the crankset pictured for 6 times your estimate. These are extremely rare and rarely come up for sale, hence my need to get up to date on prices.

IF I recall correctly (and that's a big IF) the last pair that I saw went for over $600 in decent condition.
I went to check the market highs section of CR list but alas I can't find it anymore. . .
An early 60's Pista crankset just sold for over $500.

Thanks, thats what I was hoping for. I guess the selling price is pretty flexible with these rare parts, it's not really like buyers can shop around and compare prices. I just have to find a way to get the cranks to me now.

Those are genuine second-gen 151 Record. I concur with Marty, though I'd expect a Pista set to go for about 10% over the price of a road crankset. You say that it looks to be "original" though - is this to say that it's in smashing outstanding condition?

Well, for one it still has the anodizing and it doesn't seem to have too much shoe rub. The anodizing on the pair I sold (the cranks in the picture) was well worn so I though It was a good Idea to polish them... big mistake. It took a lot of time to polish them and affected the price negatively. People looking specifically for 151bcd, second gen Record cranks ...with the raised lip around the pedals... care much more about originality than looks it seems. The cranks are currently on a bike which, form the pictures I have, has had all sorts of odd ''upgrades'' : nuovo Record FD, Shimano SLR brakes , spray paint two tone fading paint job...etc

...What?

...and I hate it when people answer questions they don't know the answer to.

The point of my question is clearly to get a feel for the market. I clearly stated that I had sold a similar item in the past and was trying to get an update on the market from people who know what they are talking about. If seeking a second opinion is asking a question you already know the answer to , so be it . It is not the difference beween $125 and $150 we are talking about here , its the difference between $300 and $600. Anyways, at least Marty understood the point of my post and made an informed reply.

I know... I guess attempts for sarcasm are very difficult to convey... (and those overpolished cranks might not even worth the $50. Take a $1000 frameset, strip it to bare metal and polish it. Is it worth $1000? or closer to $150? )

Do you have a photo? Most of the examples I've seen have had their anodizing stripped; somewhat unusual to find one that hasn't been through the process.

That description reminds me of a Motobecane that showed up on this forum about a year ago.

Don't get your wool knickers all bunched up folks. Coyote lives in an area where road cycling was quite vibrant in the 1950 and 1960s unlike many other parts of North America. He is a purveyor of fine vintage equipment that is often quite rare. This is an appraisals forums and he knows the cranks are valuable, but many of us know that these values vary widely over time. Clearly he wishes to... either

A. decide whether the cranks in question are worth the effort to obtain for resale.
B. Decide whether to offer them at a fixed price or put them on ebay.

I find it really annoying that people with less knowledge (you should know who you are) take shots at those with more because they have made a mistake or have commented on something clearly out of their knowledge base league. This happens way to often, I might ad, with a particular individual. Furthermore, attempts at sarcasm only work when the poster has exhibited some credibility when it comes to a topic.

Thanks cyclotoine for saving me from writing a much less diplomatic reply and being able to read trough the lines. I really didn't feel like arguing over the internet. I also have noticed this very unpleasant dynamic, especially in the appraisal section, for some reason.

and yes cyclotoine A and B are true since the cranks are on a bike in another country and I don't really do auctions anymore.

cudak888 ,

thanks for your your help, here is the picture I have to go form (well, without the white portions)

That does look like a nice example. I concur with Marty, though if they're longer then 170, you might have something even more popular there.

The bike is quite large so the cranks could be longer than 170, although I am not sure if it would help or hurt the value: the really rare stuff is coveted mostly by Japanese collectors, at the risk of stereotyping again, not the tallest people on earth. The bike is pretty much a done deal, a deposit has been made and, with some luck, it also has the even rarer 3rd gen Campy Record headset. Now I need to buy my plane ticket and will pick up the bike in August.
