I found a bike at the thrift store

I plan on keeping it but wanted to know something about it, It is a Raleigh Sprite 5 speed , I don't understand the gears, and wanted to know what it's worth, thanks.

What it's worth depends a lot on where you live. It's in very nice shape, and looks like it might be a large size (23" frame?) all of which are good things. Depending where you live, $100 - $200. In some areas, maybe more.

I imagine the gears are a Sturmey Archer 5 speed hub. Is there one shifter, or two? There should be a date on the rear hub --two digits such as 72 mean the hub was made in 1972. Another digit indicates the month.

two shifters , one goes to a lever that engages a button on the hub, the second shifter goes to a small chain that enters the hub on the opposite side. I can't seem to figure out the gears and what does what , I live in the burbs of Chicago but am moving to key west in 2 months and was looking for a cool bike, I think this is it.

Ride it. You won't become filthy rich by flipping it.

Key west is flatter than anything. Lots of vintage steel there too. Would be a perfect bike for the Keys, but make sure that a. it is inside and b. get a good wash and wax often to get the salt out.

Here is what Sheldon Brown writes about these hubs.

Enjoy it

Awww, that poor bike's gonna get all rusty in Key West.

First step in Key Westifying a bike is a cupholder.

Ask $150 around here and it'd be gone by the weekend.

If the gears work and are in great condition Iw ould agree with the 100+ range, but if not it's worth the weight in steel.

I think that's a great looking bike, and for $20? Wow.
