1980 Fuji Gran Tourer SE
Just bought this from a guy in the next town over from my parents. Everything appears to be original (even the whitewalls - rotting a little on the sidewalls, but the tread is good - even has the molding hairs left on them). Decals are all there, some rust on the downtube, cables, and chrome. Was probably in pretty good shape until he left it outside for a year or two.
I paid $40...do you think it was worth it?

Need pictures to tell the true damage from rust.
Edit: picture is too small to tell much, but it doesn't look too bad. Maybe try some oxalic acid to clean up the rust. If you are going to ride it around yourself, you did ok. Probably not much value as a flipper.

Thanks! I plan on using is for cruising around town as my 1994 Iron Horse mtn bike was stolen a few months ago. The only significant rust on the frame is on the downtube; unfortunately, it gets some of the decal, too. Here's a close-up:

Worth $40 if that's the extent of the rust. Fuji made nice bikes, sounds like it needs some simple refurbishing to bring it back to good riding condition. Nice.

That's basically it, besides some rust on the chrome and cables, which I've pretty much taken care of by scrubbing the chrome with wet, wadded up aluminum foil. The rear cogs and chain are a little rusty, but if lubing it up and riding doesn't work, I plan on stripping it down and going to town with some oxalic acid and a brush.
I don't know really what to do about the rust impinging on the decals. I don't want to mess them up too bad.

New chain is cheap as well, so don't waste too much time on it. Good buy for the price!
