    Pricing Question

    Hey Everyone, My name is Neil and I live in Durham NC. I have been riding road bikes for communting for about a year. I was given an old blue Columbia Blaze which I slowly fixed up on my own and I love it to death now. It gets me everywhere I need to go except for work (a little too long and too much highway to tackle.)

    I will occasionally look on local craigslist at bikes, but I am not at all knowledgeable about what certain bikes are worth. I saw this bike (http://raleigh.craigslist.org/bik/1839751244.html) and thought it looked really nice, but didn't know if the price was ok or not. If anyone has any insight on what should be charged for something like this? Is there an online resource for this info that you would recommend?

    Price is fine. I personally avoid cottered cranks. This one would be worth making that conversion if you have access to the parts. Vintage Peugeots are pretty hot in the market Even though this bike has a cottered crank, it is up several steps from the bottom back then, and I have seen the lower ones go for $150 to $200.

    Seat post is a nice upgrade (Peugeots had oddball sizing, so its great to get one already upgraded). Stem might still be the AVA death stem, do a search on that topic. If so, a replacement stem is pretty easy to handle, although the french had oddball stem sizing too (you will need to sand off just a tad off a standard sized stem).

    Bike itself is pretty attractive, with the white and black lugs. I like it!

    The trick is not the crank, its finding a solution for the bottom bracket. There are endless threads out there on that issue. The bike has french threaded bottom bracket. Forget about finding new french stuff unless you want to spend major bucks. Instead, you need to replace the spindle. It will take a lot of finagling around, but it is worth it. In the interim, just stick with the cottered crank. Its really not that bad. I had a 1975 Peugeot, I lucked into a donor bike where someone had already made the conversion. So I just swapped the parts and I was ready to go. I picked up another donor last year for the same reason, so I have a nice Stronglight BB and crankset for my next Peugeot project (I have a couple of frames when I get around to it).

    Actually, he ended up selling it before I could get out to him, so if you have any older nice looking Peugeots or really any older, sturdy bikes, I would be interested, thanks!
