1994 trek 1200

https://lafayette.craigslist.org/bik/1840109685.html

The giant I posted the other day sold within 3 hours, so on to the next one. This guy is asking for an offer, bike is my size and about 2 hours away. What would be a reasonable price to pay for this bike? What should I pay close attention to when I check the bike out?

Thanks,
Corey

Really not unusual for bikes on C/L to sell in a couple of hours, particularly if they are a good/decent deal. As you are looking at relatively modern bikes, you should consult bikepedia (it has almost all bikes 1993 and newer) for original pricing, build and other details. If you want a great deal, you need to be ready to pounce quickly, get in the car and drive, when a deal hits. You can beat out the folks that are studying up, pondering specifications, etc.

C/L ad does not list a price, which is in violation of C/L policy. I shy away from sellers looking for best offers, auctions are best held on ebay.

Bike is just before the conversion to STI, and it is a bonded aluminum frame, both of these are negatives in the modern bike market. Bike is probably worth about $250 in clean, ready to ride condition. Steel Treks draw a lot more interest.

wow awesome response. I did look on bikepedia, and the one thing that caught my attention as being negative was the bonded aluminum frame
Thank you very much

Although bonded aluminum is not a plus, Trek made them for many years without much trouble. Myself, I go for steel bikes regardless. At least right now, the vintage steel bikes are appreciating nicely.

I agree with Bill. I'm not real cool on this deal because of the bidding approach. Have you ever ridden an aluminum TREK? It's not something I'd get all fuzzy about. Yes I have freinds who have them and like them, but I'm not partial to that stiff ride. (I've owned two) And it is stiff. Keep in mind, I like and own Cannondales and I think the aluminum Treks are stiff. Bid on it if you like, but don't over bid.
