    Schwinn 434

I posted this in the road forum but didn't get any input, so I thought I would ask you guys.

I found a Schwinn 434 with an aluminum frame and a 7 speed. I don't know much more about it. It looks to be a 70's or 80's model. Its at my LBS for $250. Is it worth that much? Is it a good bike?

Actually, its a 1990/1991 model. Make sure it has the original quill seat post. Those posts are gold, and very hard to ever find a replacement. In excellent, ready to ride condition, $250 is about right for a shop selling it. I sold a really nice 1991 one, clean, ready to ride, this year for $220.

The 974 below is a great deal.

If it was one of the higher numbered models, maybe. I saw a 434 once at the flea market, the components didn't excite me that much IIRC.,,,,BD

20" is too small for me, and I'm not looking to drive all the way from NC to Ma. But thanks anyways.

I think $250 is high, but if the components are in good working order I wouldn't worry about them. I am the original owner of a 1989 564 which is a very similar bike, and while Exage isn't exciting I have only had to replace 'wear' items. I still ride it a few hundred miles a year as it's my rain bike and it goes on the trainer in winter, and it always suprised me in how smooth and quiet the hubs and shifting are.

The frame is another story, though. It displays all the road buzz and bump transfer aluminum is know for, although it also has a very quick and stiff feel to it when climbing or sprinting.

One other thing to think about is that aluminum shouldn't be stretched so you will be stuck with 126mm rear spacing. It kinda limits your parts upgrade and replacement options.

Check out these YouTube videos on the Schwinn 434, the second video details the seatpost and how it works, pretty cool.
